Gary Madsen
Gary Madsen, 89, of Provo died Aug. 28, 2024, at Utah Valley Hospital of causes incident to age. He was born in Provo on Nov. 19, 1934 to William McKinley and Mamie Loretta Draper Madsen. He went to BYU on a tennis scholarship and graduated in 1958 with a B.S. Degree in Physical Education and a minor in Music. As a senior he was captain of the tennis team and was the number one player in both singles and doubles. He was also a fast-ball softball pitcher for more than a decade for the Provo teams, “Morris Motors” and “Peterson Motors.” He had his own big band, “The Gary Madsen Band,” during the 1950’s-60’s in the style of Stan Kenton. The band played dance jobs at BYU and in Salt Lake City. He became an important arranger of dance band music and his arrangements are now used all over the state of Utah and in California. He married Cornelia May Bates on March 4, 1960. They had three sons and two daughters; William Gary, Russell Oliver, Kathryn Cornelia, Jeanne Elizabeth, and Jonathan Joseph. He was a loving father, dedicated to helping each of his kids as much as possible. He has two nephews; Matthew and James, and one niece; Jennifer. He also has four great nieces and nephews; Aesher, Kona, Kailua, and Malia. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Jack, Merrill, and Donald, his sisters Rita and Joy, and his daughter Jeanne. He was buried in the Provo City Cemetery on Sep. 3, 2024.
