Alexandre Paul

Sep 25, 2024

Alexandre Paul, 85, father of 5, died Sunday September 15, 2024. On this side of the veil he is survived by two daughters Alexandra Paul and Valerie Paul, and one son, Gregoire Gilbert Paul, as well as multiple grandchildren. On the other side of the veil he is being welcomed by Colombe Helen Paul his wife of 43 years and his sons Jean-Richard Paul and Reginald Alberoni Paul. While we mourn our loss, we are comforted by the knowledge that he has been and will be well loved. Born in Haiti, and an attorney by trade, Alexandre Paul is best remembered for his passionate defense of legal Haitian migration and Haitian rights during his time as Ambassador to the United Kingdom representing the Haitian government, Consul General in Miami and Nassau, Bahamas and the Haitian representative to the United Nations in New York. After his diplomatic career, he returned to Haiti to work in a private law practice. Never resting in his desire to help Haiti find its way to well-being and prosperity, he served in the Conseil Électoral Provisoire to help oversee free and fair elections. His passionate defense of his clients’ rights to property and defense of the rule of law as an attorney led to his incarceration as a political prisoner for three years, two months and seventeen days. Despite being exonerated in court, it was pressure from US congressmen and senators that finally led to his release. He continued to serve as an attorney and a passionate advocate for Haiti and the rule of law after his release. Later in his life, he retired from law and politics to, as he would say, “transform the land”. He could frequently be found watering his fruit trees in his mountain home in Fermathe, Haiti and later on in life in his home in Nephi, Utah. A deeply spiritual man, he continued to serve throughout his life, in the mission presidency of the LDS Church in Haiti, at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, and as a volunteer with the Sons of Utah Pioneers. He loved to tell jokes, and regale family and friends with tales of politics, what was, and what might be. He loved marquise au chocolat and a great Haitian bread pudding and never liked things that pretended to be something that they were not. He loved to dance with his wife Helen on December 31st to usher in the New Year and we hope that this year he will be dancing with her in the spirit world as the New Year makes its debut.

Services to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at Walker Sanderson Funeral home at 85 E 300 S, Provo, UT 84606. The family encourages everyone to share memories at https://www.walkersanderson.com/.
