Melvin James “Jim” Brady

1955 – 2025

Melvin James “Jim” Brady, 69, of Mapleton, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2025. He was born November 27, 1955, in Murray, Utah, to Melvin Brady and Randolyn Sharp. He married Laurel Stowe on September 2, 1982, in the Los Angeles LDS Temple.

Jim graduated from J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU in 1982. He was employed as Deputy City Attorney for Provo City, and later became a partner at Bradford, Brady, and Associates. He was appointed to the Utah County Zoning Commission and worked as Mapleton City Attorney. He served as City Councilman and Mayor for the city of Mapleton. He was an active member of the Inns of Court. He was appointed by Governor Gary Herbert to serve as a Judge in the 4th District Court in 2010.

Jim enjoyed fishing, camping, cooking, golfing, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He could fix anything, knew everything, and helped everyone he met. His capacity for loving service is unmatched. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Mexico and maintained his Spanish fluency for the rest of his life. He served many years as a Scout Leader. He and his wife were foster parents to more than 100 children. He also opened his home to several exchange students over the years.

Jim is survived by his wife, Laurel Brady, of Mapleton, Utah, and seven of his eight children: Hilary Brady of Antioch, California; Jill-Marie (Richard) Gwilliam of Lehi, Utah; Jay (Deborah) Brady of Sahuarita, Arizona; Camary (Josh) Hackwell of Springville, Utah; Trevor Brady of Provo, Utah; Beau (Kaysie) Brady of Mapleton, Utah; Aja Brady of Mapleton, Utah. He is also survived by his siblings: Lorrie (Craig) Winter of Cedar City, Utah; Cindy (Judd) Rex of Yorba Linda, California; Dave (Paula) Brady of Manhattan Beach, California, Rob (Steph) Brady of Cedar City, Utah; Spencer (Andi) Brady, of Santa Rosa, California; Leo (Rose) Tsosie of Low Mountain, Arizona; 11 Grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and -nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Eli Brady; his parents, Melvin and Randolyn Brady; and his son-in-law, Matthew Steadman.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 21, 2025, at 12:00 pm at the LDS Chapel located at 970 North 400 East, Mapleton, with a viewing held that morning at the church from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the services. A viewing for family and friends will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2025, from 6-8 pm at Wheeler-Sundberg Funeral Home Mapleton, 82 West 400 North, Mapleton. Interment will be in Mapleton City Cemetery, 620 W Maple Street, Mapleton.
