Stuart Von Duncan
1946 – 2025
Stuart Von Duncan passed away in his home on Saturday, April 26th, 2025. There is a void in all of our hearts, but also happiness in knowing he is whole and that those on the other side are having a joyous reunion with their son, brother, and friend.
Stuart was born on 25 November 1946, to Clinton Lee Duncan and Mabel June Westover in Winslow, Arizona. He was the first of seven brothers and had one older sister.
Stuart was raised in Joseph City, Arizona. He loved Arizona, and spoke often and fondly of his childhood, and his antics with his brothers and cousins. He loved to talk about living on Route 66 and of waking early every morning to milk the cows at the dairy (even on Christmas Morning, he would remind us, if we ever grumbled).
In 1966, Stuart was called to and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Sao Paulo, Brazil. He once said that he had left his small town in Arizona, headed for the jungle of South America – and then was shocked when he arrived in one of the largest cities in the world. He loved his mission, and continued friendships built there through his entire life.
After returning from his mission Stuart attended Brigham Young University, earning both a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Education. After completing his Bachelor’s Degree, he was drafted to serve in the US Army. During his service, he was stationed in Germany, serving as a medical assistant in the US Army medical clinic. Once again, he loved the people there and built relationships that would continue throughout his life.
Upon returning from Germany in 1973, he returned to BYU. There he met the love of his life, Helen Kay Castleton Jones and her two children Jennifer Leigh Jones and Thomas Daniels Jones III. Helen immediately fell in love with Stuart and his gentle love and kindness to her children. They were married in the Provo Temple on 30 January 1975.
Together, they made their Home and family – first in Provo, UT and later in Orem, UT where their home is to this day. They were blessed with 4 more children – Heather Elaine Duncan, Paul Stuart Duncan, Clinton Joseph Duncan, and Brady McKay Duncan. Again, he continued to share his love with those around him, and his ward and neighborhood were better for him being a part of it.
Stuart’s life was love and service. From visiting widows, to listening to (and loving) everyone’s story, to countless callings at church, to his dedicated service to his Savior. He lived the Savior’s admonition to “Love your neighbor.”
His joy was found in his children and grandchildren, and he left a great legacy of 27 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
He leaves an immeasurable hole in our hearts and our community. You will be missed. We love you dad.
Funeral service will be held Monday May 5, 2025 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 500 S 600 W, Orem Utah. Visitations will be Sunday May 4, 2025 from 6-8 pm and Monday May 5, 2025 from 9:30-10:30 am, both held at the church. Interment will be at the Orem City Cemetery under the direction of Southern Utah Mortuary. Online condolences and the live stream of the services will be available at www.mortuary.org.
