Donald Eugene (Gene) Mead

Donald Eugene (Gene) Mead, 90, of Provo, Utah, died Peacefully on February 14, 2025. Gene was born on Sept. 30, 1934, to Stanley Lewis and Mildred Painter Mead in Mansfield, Ohio. Growing up in Portland, Oregon, Gene adopted a love of hiking, camping, mountain climbing, and skiing and spent his summers with the YMCA. He met and married the love of his life, Sherrill Dean Leavitt, on Sept. 11, 1954. Gene joined the US Air force, serving as a Lieutenant. He was a true scholar and pursued advanced degrees, earning a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon. As a professor at Brigham Young University-Provo he was instrumental in developing the Marriage and Family Therapy program. He was a distinguished faculty member for 40 years, from 1967-2007.

Gene will be remembered for the profound impact he had on the lives of those who were blessed to know him. His legacy is one of love, integrity, compassion, strong convictions and unwavering faith. He is survived by his three children, Stan Mead (Kathy), Marcia Ellsworth (David), and Christine Yates (Paul), nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, his brother Roger and sister Kathleen Taylor.

A teacher to the end, Gene donated his body to education at the U. of U. Medical Center. Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service, on March 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the LDS Timpview building, 2445 Timpview Drive, Provo, Utah.
