Bruce Cameron Call

Oct 2, 2026

Bruce Cameron Call passed away on August 16, 2026 at the age of 37 in Columbia, Missouri, following a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Emma Buckingham, his parents, Steve and Monica Call, and his brother, Joe Call.

Bruce was born in Bountiful, Utah, on November 21, 1988, and grew up in Provo, graduating from Provo High School (2007), Brigham Young University (BA, 2010), and Utah State University (MS, 2017). He was a remarkable person–a passionate scientist with a deep love for the natural world, an avid traveler who explored with curiosity and kindness, an accomplished musician, and most importantly, a loyal friend and devoted husband, son, and brother.

Beginning in 2018, Bruce served as an interdisciplinary physical scientist, hydrologist, and geographer for the United States Geological Survey in Columbia, Missouri. He worked at the USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center as a hydrologist and Geographic Information Sciences Specialist. The accuracy of the computer models he created for geomorphology and fish migration informed decisions about managing the endangered pallid sturgeon in the Missouri River.

Bruce was a talented musician with a passion for languages and cultures. A polyglot, he spoke Arabic fluently and had beginner-level proficiency in 48 additional languages. He enjoyed playing the keyboard, composing, and was an award-winning marimba soloist. A Renaissance man, intelligent and well-rounded, he was also a great conversationalist, willing to talk to just about anybody, about anything. He was always kind, easygoing, genuine, and non-judgmental. Above all, he was a good and caring person.

Friends and family are encouraged to attend his Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 10th, 3:00 – 6:00 pm at the Nelson Family Mortuary, 4780 N University Ave, Provo, UT 84604. We will welcome guests at 3:00 pm, with a program of speakers, short films, and musical selections beginning at 3:30 pm, followed by a reception.
