Nancy Catherine Bagwell Gray

Oct 14, 2026

January 10, 1942 – October 10, 2026

Nancy Catherine Bagwell Gray was the middle of five children born to LaVere and Dola Bagwell in Alamosa, Colorado. An adventurous tomboy with a fearless spirit, Nancy grew up raising and caring for hundreds of chickens. Her talents were many– from 4H student, Teacher, pianist, skilled seamstress participating in Wool contests and making curtains, to an exceptionally busy mom. She took great pride in her community, helping create decorated floats for Manassa Pioneer Days and making scones every Fourth of July to support the ward budget and building fund. Though she was the middle child, her siblings would all agree–she was the bossy sister.

Nancy attended BYU Provo, BYU Hawaii and graduated from Adams State College a few short months before marrying the love of her life and best friend Robert. Nancy and Robert Nelson Gray were married on July 19, 1963, their marriage was sealed for all time and eternity in the Manti Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After marrying they moved to Chicago for Robert to finish medical school and Nancy had an opportunity to use her teaching degree.

Nancy moved to El Paso, Texas, to support Robert during his time in the Air Force, and it was there that they welcomed their first child. Three years later while stationed in Clovis, New Mexico, they nearly doubled their family with the birth of twin boys. Shortly after they left the Air Force and returned to Alamosa, where Robert established a busy medical practice delivering babies through the night and working tirelessly through the day while Nancy managed the lively chaos at home. It was in Alamosa that she gave birth to her second set of twins, this time a boy and a girl. In 1978, the family relocated to Provo, Utah, where Robert opened a new medical practice, beginning another chapter in their journey together.

Nancy was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many callings including Gospel Doctrine and many years in Primary, Young Women’s and Relief Society.

After sending five missionaries throughout the world Nancy and Robert began the first of many years of their own service missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their first mission, Moscow, Russia, was an Area Medical Mission in Eastern Europe, covering 18 countries and 13 missions. When they returned to the U.S., they served another Area Medical Mission in the Northeastern United States and Canada, covering 20 mission areas. Their third mission was in Ogden, Utah, in the Pioneer Ward as inner city service missionaries. Upon finishing their missions, Nancy and Robert settled in Ogden and served in various callings in the Malan’s Peak ward for 10 years before moving to Layton, Utah.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister Beverly Spencer. Nancy is survived by her 5 children, Rebecca (Sterling) Sagers, Eric (Lisa) Gray, Douglas (Nancy) Gray, Stuart (Heidi) Gray, & Amy (Gabriel) Skehan, 16 grandchildren and her siblings BoJean Sellers, Robert “Bobby” Bagwell, and Blaine Bagwell.
