To vow or not to vow on an island

By Staff | Jan 30, 2015

A destination wedding drops the loving couple in an idyllic location to vow their love together for a lifetime. According to the Association of Bridal Consultants, five to seven percent of all weddings are at a distant location, indicating couples no longer feel obligated to tie the knot in their hometown.

A dream of saying, “I do,” in a distant locale may be just that. Like here, there are legal rules to follow so the union has the status intended back on home turf.

Does the cherished memory of walking down the aisle on a Caribbean beach or in a Scottish castle picture just the two of you? It can be glamorous to travel far away for this cherished moment and cut expenses by using the wedding as part of the honeymoon. On the other hand, people who love and cherish you may not be able to afford the destination, particularly for an entire family.

These hints help make the occasion work and let you find ways to welcome people who otherwise might be left ashore as you board the ship for your loving destiny.

ON THE ROAD TO NEAR OR FAR

¦ Seek out discounts. Use bridal amenities and planning resources where you stay. Check on what size a “group” must be. A date that edges the busy season rather than during it can be less expensive. An all-in-one site or plan may appeal to a larger group making it a family vacation on the annual budget. Supply information about other entertainment there. Provide events that bring guests together.

¦ Broaden the appeal. Choose a holiday weekend for the getaway with more time and fun surrounding the wedding day. Find a closer location with extended appeal, perhaps a coastal beach or water sports location in the central or upper Midwest.

¦ Simplify transportation. A location near the airport saves time and transfers. Provide a way for the group to move to events.

¦ Stay calm. Even those who cater to weddings in slower-moving environments may not move close to your pace. Be patient but kindly persistent.

¦ Visit the location in advance or find people who have experienced the location to share personal impressions and reference.
