North Sanpete Middle School educates with positive reinforcement
Being called into the principal’s office usually strikes terror in the hearts of students. But in North Sanpete Middle School Principal Jeff Ericksen is changing that.
Inspired by a program developed by 2023’s National HS Principal of the Year, Ericksen and the teachers at NS Middle School pivot to recognize kids who have good behavior, not bad behavior. The positive reinforcement begins with teachers nominating a student who has exhibited exemplary behavior by doing good deeds, significantly elevating their grades or otherwise being a role model.
The magic happens when Principal Ericksen calls the teacher-nominated student into the principal’s office. Instead of being “in trouble” the student is commended for good behavior. The student gets a “go to the front of the lunch line” pass, a candy bar and a chance to spoof their parents by calling parents from the school principal’s office. Instead of hearing bad behavior, the parents are surprised to hear of their student being commended for good behavior.
The positive reinforcement program comes full circle when the student gets a chance to make a video for the teacher who recommended them. The videos allow the student to vocalize their appreciation for the teacher and are both heartwarming and gratifying for the teacher to see.
The North Sanpete Middle School’s motto is “Educate, prepare and empower students to be college and career ready.” The North Sanpete Middle School has an enrollment of 423 7th and 8th graders and ranks No. 34 among all middle schools in Utah.
