Gunnison’s Independence Day Celebration promises fun for all ages

By Staff | Jun 19, 2024

GUNNISON – The Independence Day Celebration Committee is thrilled to unveil its exciting plans for this year’s Independence Day festivities, set to take place at Gunnison City Park on Wednesday, July 3 and Thursday, July 4. With an array of activities designed to entertain all ages, Gunnison is the place to be for a memorable celebration.

July 3: Fun, Auctions, and a Concert

The festivities kick off on the evening of July 3 at 4 p.m. with food vendors, crafts, and a brand-new event for youth: free laser tag with multiple stations set up throughout the park. The evening promises a mix of excitement and community spirit.

At 6 p.m., the much-anticipated annual auction begins, featuring hand-made quilts, specialty guns, swing sets, and a variety of unique items. All proceeds from the auction will support a community project to build new, larger restrooms at the park to accommodate the large crowds that gather for Gunnison’s annual events. This lively auction, led by five entertaining auctioneers, draws participants from far and wide.

At 8:45 p.m., the evening’s entertainment ramps up with a concert headlined by rising star Lanie Gardner. Gardner, a singer-songwriter known for her unique blend of country and classic rock, will perform cover songs as well as her own original tunes. The 24-year-old artist, who gained fame with her viral rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” has since toured with notable artists such as Jelly Roll, the Jonas Brothers, and ZZ Ward. Concertgoers can look forward to a dynamic performance enhanced by new speakers throughout the park, ensuring everyone can enjoy the music.

Concert admission is free, and the show will be followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 10 p.m., orchestrated by Fireman Steve Saulter and the Gunnison Valley Fire Department. The fireworks, set off from the hill directly above the park, promise a breathtaking show with hundreds of rockets illuminating the sky in quick succession over 15 minutes.

For the younger crowd, the evening concludes with a Youth Dance at 10:15 p.m. on the old tennis courts in the park. Admission is $5 for ages 12-18, providing a perfect end to an evening filled with fun and festivity.

July 4: A Day of Patriotic Celebrations

The celebrations continue bright and early on July Fourth, beginning with a 5K Run/Walk at 6 a.m. At 7 a.m., the local American Legion will serve breakfast, fueling participants for the day ahead. The parade, a highlight of the festivities, starts at 9 a.m. on Main Street, showcasing the community’s patriotic spirit.

From 10 a.m. onward, the park will buzz with activities, including games, a car show, craft vendors, and a Lions Club lunch. Bingo enthusiasts can join in the fun at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, the Gunnison City Swimming Pool offers free swimming from noon until 4 p.m., with a special Diving for Dollars event at 1 p.m.
