Witness the magic of migration at the 2025 Delta Snow Goose Festival

By Staff | Feb 12, 2025

Geese leave Gunnison Bend Reservoir to feed in fields near the reservoir.

Experience one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles as thousands of snow geese take flight during the annual Delta Snow Goose Festival, happening Feb. 21-22. Hosted by the Delta Chamber of Commerce, this beloved event draws visitors from across the region to witness the awe-inspiring migration at Gunnison Bend Reservoir, just west of Delta.

The highlight of the festival is the free snow goose viewing event presented by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. In past years, as many as 20,000 snow geese have gathered at the reservoir, creating a stunning display of white wings accented by their distinctive black-tipped feathers. DWR biologists will be on hand both days to share fascinating facts about these migratory birds and guide visitors to the best viewing spots.

When and where to see the geese

The best times to view the geese are early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Arrive in Delta at dawn to see the geese feeding in nearby fields. Then, between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., witness the thrilling moment when thousands of birds take flight, filling the sky with their honks and the rush of wings as they head to the reservoir.

“Seeing those thousands of geese in flight makes for incredible photos,” said Adam Kavalunas, DWR Southern Region outreach manager. “Watching and hearing the geese can take your breath away. It’s a great family activity, and we encourage you to come out and see these amazing birds in flight during the festival.”

The geese typically remain on the reservoir for several hours before taking off again between 4-6 p.m. to return to the fields. If you miss the morning lift-off, don’t worry–DWR biologists will monitor the flocks and can direct late arrivals to the best locations for viewing.

Tips for the best viewing experience

  • Bring your own binoculars or a spotting scope to get an up-close view of the geese without disturbing them.
  • Respect private property boundaries–trespassing is not permitted.
  • If you pull off the road to view the geese, ensure your vehicle is parked safely and legally, while avoiding private land.
  • Dress in warm, layered clothing to stay comfortable in cold, wet weather conditions.
