North Sanpete wrestlers shine at 53rd Annual Tournament of Champions

With Krew King and Odin Laupapa leading the charge, the Hawks are ready to write another chapter in the storied tradition of excellence that defines North Sanpete wrestling.
VERNAL — North Sanpete High School’s wrestling team turned heads this weekend with an impressive showing at the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Vernal. Despite fielding only seven varsity wrestlers, the Hawks secured an impressive 7th-place finish out of 32 teams, thanks to standout performances from seniors Krew King and Odin Laupapa, who each claimed individual titles in their weight divisions.
For Krew King, the 113-lb championship was more than just a personal victory–it was a family legacy fulfilled. His triumph mirrored that of his father and coach, Kris King, who won the same tournament as a senior at North Sanpete 27 years ago.
“Winning this tournament is something I really wanted to do,” Krew said. “To do it representing the same school as my dad did is something I’ll never forget.”
Krew’s path to victory included a commanding performance in the finals against a hometown wrestler from Uintah. Facing the pressure of a partisan crowd, Krew secured a dominant major decision, showcasing his technical prowess and poise on the mat.
At 215 lbs, Odin Laupapa delivered a similarly dominant performance. In his championship match against a strong opponent from Lyman, Laupapa wasted no time, taking his opponent down and earning a decisive pin in the first round.
“I knew it was going to be hard, and to be honest, I was scared,” Laupapa admitted. “But I knew if I gave it my all, the outcome wouldn’t matter because I tried my best.”
Head coach Kris King praised the leadership and dedication of his two seniors.
“Krew and Odin have been phenomenal leaders for this team,” King said. “Krew’s win is extra special for our family and the program, and Odin’s power and focus are unmatched. These two seniors are setting the tone for the entire squad.”
The team’s success extended beyond its champions. Senior Cody Dyches battled valiantly, finishing fourth after a tough semifinal match against the top seed, and sophomore Chase Sorensen showed promise with a sixth-place finish.
North Sanpete’s seventh-place overall finish, despite bringing only seven wrestlers, is a testament to the team’s determination and talent.
“The effort from every wrestler this weekend was incredible,” Coach King added. “It’s moments like these that make all the hard work worth it. I’m so proud of these boys.”
As the season continues, North Sanpete’s wrestlers are poised to build on this momentum. With Krew King and Odin Laupapa leading the charge, the Hawks are ready to write another chapter in the storied tradition of excellence that defines North Sanpete wrestling.
