CentraCom begins fiber upgrade in Santaquin using high-tech micro-trenching

Residents and businesses in Santaquin are about to experience a major leap forward in internet speed and reliability as CentraCom begins a citywide upgrade to its infrastructure, replacing aging cable-modem service with cutting-edge fiber-optic technology.

Construction officially began earlier this month, and the project will roll out in phases throughout 2025, bringing multi-gigabit symmetrical internet speeds to homes and businesses across the community.

What makes this upgrade especially noteworthy is the use of micro-trenching — a high-tech installation method being deployed in Santaquin for the very first time.

A cleaner, faster approach

Unlike traditional construction methods that can cause major disruption to streets, sidewalks, and yards, micro-trenching utilizes narrow, shallow cuts — often along the edges of roadways or property lines — allowing for faster installation with minimal surface damage.

“We know how important it is to respect the properties of the communities we serve,” said Brad Welch, chief operating officer at CentraCom. “That’s why we’re investing in micro-trenching. It’s a more expensive construction process, but it helps us minimize damage and complete projects faster–while taking better care of Santaquin residents’ homes and neighborhoods.”

Brett Johnson, construction manager at CentraCom, explained further: “Micro-trenching gives us the precision and control we need to install fiber with very little surface disruption. It’s clean, efficient, and ideal for residential areas where preserving curb appeal really matters.”

Better internet, built for the future

Once completed, the fiber upgrade will deliver symmetrical upload and download speeds, making it easier than ever for Santaquin residents to work remotely, stream in ultra-high definition, connect smart home devices, and enjoy seamless online learning and gaming experiences.

“Our commitment to Santaquin is long-term,” said Nate Palmer, vice president of marketing at CentraCom. “We’re not just upgrading infrastructure — we’re building a better internet experience for this community, now and into the future.”

Residents will be notified as service becomes available in their neighborhoods. Construction is already underway in several areas, with the first wave of activations expected soon.
