If you want to try your hand at some short-range target shooting or learn more about hunting and fishing skills, there are three upcoming events — including the popular Josie Shoot — hosted by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources that you don’t want to miss.

If you’ve ever wanted to improve your aim, build confidence with firearms, or just enjoy a fun and welcoming shooting competition, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has three exciting events on the calendar for early summer–and they’re perfect for newcomers and seasoned shooters alike.

Whether you’re a woman looking to expand your outdoor skills, a man ready to join a friendly shooting match, or a multi-generational family hoping to build new traditions, these events offer something for everyone–plus a whole lot of Utah spirit.

Women’s Hunting & Fishing Open House

Saturday, May 31 | 1-4 p.m.

Lee Kay Public Shooting Range, 6000 W. 2100 South, Salt Lake City

Free | Pre-register on Eventbrite

Ladies, if you’ve ever thought about trying out hunting, fishing, or target shooting but weren’t sure where to start–this event is for you. The Women’s Hunting and Fishing Open House offers a no-pressure, family-friendly afternoon of hands-on experiences. Women of all skill levels are invited to participate in casting demos (both fly fishing and traditional rod and reel), hunting dog demonstrations, wild game cooking, and the opportunity to try out archery, shotguns, and .22 rifles.

All gear is provided, and experienced mentors will be on hand to guide participants through every step. The event is free to attend, and kids are welcome with a parent or guardian (minimum ages: 10 for archery, 12 for shooting). Whether you’re just curious about outdoor recreation or looking to expand your skills, this event is a fantastic entry point into Utah’s rich outdoor traditions.

3rd Annual .22 Wild Bunch Shoot (Men’s Competition)

Friday, June 6 | 3-6 p.m.

Buckskin Hills Shooting Complex, Vernal

Awards at 6:45 p.m. | Uintah Conference Center, 313 E. 200 S., Vernal

Free | Bring your own rifle and ammo | Pre-register on Eventbrite or register day-of

Get ready for some friendly firepower at the 3rd Annual Wild Bunch Shoot. This .22 caliber men’s competition has quickly become a highlight of the shooting sports calendar in Vernal–especially for the men supporting the women’s Josie Shoot the following day.

Participants will fire 10 shots each from prone, sitting, and standing positions at targets about 30 yards away. Shooters may enter either the open sight or scope category (not both), and must provide their own ammo and standard .22 rifles (no target rifles, magnums, bipods or handguns allowed).

Age divisions include:

  • Youngin: 11-17
  • Codger: 18-49
  • Old Fogy: 50+

Participants age 16 or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and have completed Hunter Education. Prizes will be awarded for the top three finishers in each division, sponsored by the Wildlife Conservation Foundation.

Don’t forget your lawn chairs–seating is limited and the camaraderie is half the fun!

36th Annual .22 Josie Shoot (Women’s Competition)

Saturday, June 7 | 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Buckskin Hills Shooting Complex, Vernal

Shootoffs at 11:15 a.m. | Awards at 1 p.m. | Uintah Conference Center

Free | Pre-register on Eventbrite | Bring your own ammo

A beloved Uintah Basin tradition returns this June as women from all across the region gather for the iconic Josie Shoot–a celebration of marksmanship, sisterhood, and the enduring spirit of the West.

Founded in 1988 by Hunter Education instructor Carole Jackson, the Josie Shoot was inspired by pioneer woman Josie Bassett Morris, a local legend known for her strength, independence, and resourcefulness. Today, the shoot continues to honor her legacy by encouraging women to build shooting skills in a supportive, friendly, and confidence-boosting environment.

Like the men’s event, participants can compete with either open sights or scopes (not both) using their own .22 caliber rifles and ammunition. The course includes three shooting positions–prone, sitting, and standing–from about 30 yards.

Age divisions include:

  • Juniors: 11-17
  • Seniors: 18-49
  • Vintage: 50+

Girls age 16 and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and must have completed Hunter Education.

“This event is one I look forward to every year,” said Tonya Kieffer-Selby, DWR’s Northeastern Region Outreach Manager. “It’s incredible to see generations of women–mothers, daughters, granddaughters–coming together, forming friendships, and strengthening this incredible tradition Carole began.”

Come Build Confidence and Camaraderie

Whether you’re an experienced marksman or just curious to try something new, these DWR-hosted events offer safe, welcoming, and supportive opportunities to engage with Utah’s shooting sports. Each event emphasizes safety, skill-building, and community–and best of all, they’re free to attend.
