The Fairview Museum is proud to feature the artwork of two new local artists — husband and wife Tim and Tammy Merritt. Their joint exhibit will open with a public reception on Friday, Sept. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m., and will remain on display through Nov. 29. All are invited to attend and enjoy an evening of art, conversation, and community.
A lifelong love for art
For Timmy Merritt, art has been a constant thread through life. Raised in Griffin, Georgia, Tim discovered his artistic abilities in high school with the encouragement of an art teacher. Though he went on to earn a degree in accounting and spent his career managing inventory and logistics — including at the city of Griffin Electric Department — he never left his passion behind.
In his younger years, he airbrushed murals, T-shirts, and jackets, often painting at youth sporting events and creating Disney-inspired shirts for his daughter. Life’s responsibilities eventually pushed art to the side, but after moving to Fairview eight years ago with his wife Tammy, Tim once again picked up a paintbrush. Inspired by his love for Marvel superheroes and encouraged by Tammy, he began painting pieces for their home and soon rediscovered the joy of creating.
Finding rest through creativity
Tammy, meanwhile, came to art later in life. Having worked more than 30 years in a demanding career protecting children from abuse and neglect, she often sought creative outlets to relieve stress. Inspired by Bob Ross reruns and online art tutorials, she began experimenting with painting in her spare time. After retiring in 2022 following a serious illness, she found more time to explore her creativity.
With Tim’s encouragement, Tammy gained the confidence to share her paintings publicly. Their decision to exhibit together reflects their shared journey–two life partners exploring different genres and styles, now displayed side by side.
A shared exhibit for the community
Visitors to the Merritts’ debut exhibit at the Fairview Museum will enjoy a wide variety of work. Tim’s acrylic paintings celebrate bold superhero themes and striking imagery, while Tammy’s pieces highlight landscapes, animals, Native American-inspired art, and faith-based works. Together, their collections offer something for every visitor to enjoy.
“This is our first time sharing our art publicly,” the couple shared. “We are excited to have the community experience our work together.”
