Spring City Concert Series to conclude with showcase of young talent
SPRING CITY — The final performance of this year’s Spring City Concert Series is set for Friday at 7 p.m., bringing an evening of exceptional young talent to the community.
The concert will be held at the ballroom inside the Spring City Community Center and will feature three accomplished high school musicians representing both local and international backgrounds.
Headlining the evening is Annie Zhao, a senior at Wasatch Academy and an award-winning performer on the zhudi, a traditional Chinese bamboo flute. Zhao has earned multiple gold medals with perfect scores at the UHSAA State Solo and Ensemble competition and has also been recognized with a Gold Award at the International Chinese Arts Festival.
Most recently, she captured both Gold Prize and Grand Prize honors at Wasatch Academy’s Jensen Gill Performing Arts Competition, performing advanced zhudi repertoire. In addition to her musical accomplishments, Zhao is an outstanding student, recognized for academic achievement in studio arts and active as a member of the National Honor Society. She also serves in student council as Head of International Students, where she promotes multicultural engagement on campus.
Through her performances, Zhao aims to preserve and share the expressive beauty of traditional Chinese music. The zhudi — sometimes referred to as the xiao — is a vertical, end-blown bamboo flute often described as producing a sound reminiscent of the soft, elegant call of a phoenix.
Joining Zhao on the program is fellow Wasatch Academy student Kevin Chen, a sophomore pianist originally from China. In addition to his musical pursuits, Chen is a strong academic performer and participates in both track and soccer.
Rounding out the evening is local musician Annabelle Friar, a senior at North Sanpete High School. A Spring City native, Friar plans to continue her education at Snow College and brings a hometown connection to the concert stage.
The Spring City Concert Series is co-sponsored by Spring City Corp. and serves a dual purpose — providing cultural enrichment for the community while raising funds to maintain the grand piano donated to the city by the Bastien Foundation.
Organizers encourage residents and visitors alike to attend the performance and support these talented young musicians. The event is open to the public and offers a unique opportunity to experience a blend of classical piano and traditional Chinese music in one of Spring City’s most cherished gathering spaces.
