1939 – 2022

James Ray Gillespie, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2022, in Boise, ID.

He was born September 12, 1939, in Tooele, UT to Leo and Mahala Gillespie. Jim worked for Albertsons in Utah for years to pay for his college education. He graduated from University of Utah with a BS in Marketing in 1961 and in 1963 from the College of Law. It was at the end of Law School when he met the love of his life, Judy Hughes. They were married the same year.

Jim and Judy moved to Boise, ID in 1964 where he joined the prominent law firm of Eberle, Berlin, Kading, Turnbow and Gillespie for 25 years. Jim then established a successful law firm of his own, practicing for another 31 years. He loved the law and his many clients.

He knew how to make things happen, was continually sought out for advice and mentoring. “Get a smile on your face and a positive attitude,” was his life motto that he shared with everyone.

He loved working on his ranch in Utah, fishing, hunting, pigeon racing and sharing a cup of coffee with friends. Jim leaves a legacy of family, friends, and multitude of accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by his parents (Leo & Mahala Gillespie), his brother (Richard Gillespie) and his beloved wife, Judy Gillespie.

He is survived by his son, Todd Gillespie (Alison), daughter Marilee Morley (Paul), grandchildren Isaac Morley and Rachel Morley, and sisters Cathleen Hutchings and Sue Stavros (Dave Hoffman), many nephews, nieces, Russ Evans (Tara), and ranch family Mike Cox, Dave Hansen and Jay Hansen.

His family thanks the amazing and caring staff of Truewood by Merrill and the care team at First Choice Hospice.
