Elaine Ence Tolman

Jul 12, 2023

June 11, 1936 – July 4, 2023

Our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, “favorite aunt,” and friend, Elaine Ence Tolman, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 4, 2023, twenty years after her husband. Elaine was born the second daughter and fourth child to Niels Arvel Ence and Alice Sanford Ence on June 11, 1936 in Springville Utah. She spent her growing up years in Springville. She graduated from Springville High School, attended Brigham Young University and worked at the Springville Bank.

She met her eternal companion, Orson Duncan Tolman (nicknamed Brig), through a friend. He proposed to her shortly after their first date and they were married 3 months later on July 18, 1957 in the Manti Utah Temple. They made their first home in Las Cruces, New Mexico where Orson had been offered a civilian job at White Sands Missile Range. Their first two daughters, Kim and Tammy were born in Las Cruces, then they moved back to Utah in 1961 where Brad, Troy, and Heather were born.

Elaine was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many callings faithfully throughout her life. Her love of the Savior never waivered nor did her testimony of the Church.

She was an excellent caregiver to her husband as he battled cancer. Mom was very devoted to her family, dedicating her life to loving and being an example of faith and strength to her 5 children, 30 grandchildren, and 57 great-grandchildren. She loved to sew, quilt, and crochet, even teaching some of her grandchildren this art. She loved to make things which she joyfully gave to others.

Elaine leaves a legacy of service to family and community members; serving in her local chapter of Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and at the Fairview Museum.

Preceded in death by husband (Orson), daughter (Kim Tolman Penrod), sister (Mary Louise), brother (Paul), and grandson (Joshua Tolman). Survived by her children Tammy Tolman (Lucky) Morse, Orson Bradley (Sheri) Tolman, Troy E (Belki) Tolman, Heather Alyce Tolman (Rondy) Black.

Services were held at the Fairview 2nd Ward Chapel Tuesday July 11, 2023 at 11:00, Viewing prior to services 9:30 – 10:30 am at the church. Interment in the Fairview City Cemetery. Online condolences at rasmussenmortuary.com.
