Mark Johnson Averett

Apr 13, 2026

Mark Johnson Averett passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on April 9, 2026, after a courageous battle against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Mark was born on April 21, 1962 in Provo, Utah to Bud Weight Averett and Jane Johnson Averett. Mark was the youngest of five siblings, whom he looked up to and loved dearly. In his youth he developed his love for the outdoors. Many of his happiest moments were spent playing sports, riding horses, hunting, and being with his dogs.

Mark graduated from Springville High School in 1980, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a four-year varsity letterman in each sport and was recognized as the most outstanding athlete in his class. It didn’t take long for people to recognize that Mark was a tremendous athlete. Whether it was his buzzer-beater against Provo in double overtime, or a game-winner on Bud and Jane’s basketball court, there was no denying his perfect jumpshot. After graduation, Mark remained a loyal Red Devil fan, attending games to support family members and fellow Red Devil athletes.

On April 7, 1983, Mark married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Brenda Fullmer. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Provo Utah temple. Their marriage was deeply rooted in love and in the meaningful traditions they created. Together, they built a wonderful life and raised five beautiful children. Much of their time was happily spent at ball games and musical performances, cheering on children, nieces and nephews, and later, their grandchildren. He was a proud supporter, offering up his signature words of encouragement before every event: “positive, confidence, and have fun!”

Mark had a long and successful working career with Staker Parson, where he celebrated his retirement in July of 2025 after 44 years. Those who worked closely with Mark admired him and looked up to him. He was a well-respected leader and a dedicated mentor. Known for being firm in his decision making yet approachable, he inspired confidence in those around him. Mark was a man of high integrity who took great pride and satisfaction in his work, often enjoying the opportunity to show off his projects during drives with his family.

Mark cherished his relationships with family. He always had a special place in his heart for his mother, who he loved so deeply. He found joy in simply being together, whether at home, on the golf course, or up the canyon. Some of his most treasured memories were made in the mountains with his family and friends hunting, camping, and fishing together. He played the role of dad and grandpa to those who needed it. He was an amazing grandpa who was adored by his grandchildren. They will always remember the nicknames he gave them and the moments spent sitting next to him in his chair.

Mark was thought of by most as a strong man not the kind of strength measured by lifting weights, but the “real man” strength that comes from hard work. Though ALS took away his physical strength, he demonstrated strength in many other ways. He showed strength in his trials, strength in his endless love for his family, and strength in his testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mark had a strong testimony of the gospel and the plan of salvation. Mark’s legacy is one of love, strength, and devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his example will continue to live on in the lives he touched.

He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda, of Springville, Utah; his five children Jodi Averett, Mark (Stacey) Averett, Holli (Alec) Carlson, Ashli (Ivan) Brooks, Scott (Ali) Averett; his nine grandchildren Gus, Scarlet, Codi, Nolan, Clyde, Lucy, June, Wayne, Dani and two granddaughters expected in May; his brother Steven (Nanette) Averett, sister Tammy Oakey, sister-in-law Karen Averett, and brother-in-law Ross Riding.

He is preceded in death by his father, Bud Averett; mother, Jane Averett; brother, John Averett; and sister, Susan Riding.
