There’s nothing all that remarkable about Bruce Mitchell at a glance.

Recruiting credentials prior to arriving at BYU? Almost none.

A notable name or even an upbringing that screams stardom? Well, his name is Bruce Mitchell and he’s from Kamas, Utah, so…nope.

Any standout plays most fans can point to at any point last season? Not particularly due to the fact that he plays the relatively inconspicuous center position.

But ask any of his teammates, and they’ll readily define him as one of the best, if not the best player on the entire team respective to the position he plays.

“Every day I’m going up against the best offensive lineman in the country,” assessed BYU defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa. “That’s definitely a blessing for me and for the entire team to be able to go up against Bruce Mitchell every day and to just be around him. All of us are and will be better because of it.”

Yes, Mitchell emerged as one of the top players on BYU’s football team last season, whether the casual fan recognizes the fact or not.

The Big 12 Conference certainly recognized him as a top player, and tagged him with First-team All-Big 12 Conference honors at the close of last season. The feat was all the more remarkable given the fact that it was time he was afforded an entire offseason to prepare for playing the position after being thrust into action prematurely as a converted defensive linemen during the 2024 season.

“I went from just relying on brute strength trying to hit a guy in 2024 to really learning the position,” Mitchell said. “There’s always room for growth, but last season I was able to solidify my position at center and totally focus on that for the first time, and I think it paid off. But there’s still so much for me to improve on and that’s my focus every day.”

Mitchell signed on to play at BYU after helping lead South Summit High School to consecutive 2A state championships. He served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Seattle prior to joining the football team and spent his initial seasons working his way up the defensive line ranks.

As mentioned, that all changed in 2024 when he was thrust into action after the Cougars incurred some difficult injury issues at the center position. And after faring relatively well initially, all factors considered, the 6-foot-4, 305 pound senior has emerged as a team leader and simply as one of the best talents on the entire team at any position.

But you might know it by the way he presents himself in a very laid-back manner with a slight grin always across his face.

“I’m just feeling really comfortable with everything going on heading into this final season here at BYU,” he said. “I felt I improved a lot last season, but the goal is always to improve at least as much for what will be my last season. So spring practice went well, I think, I feel I’m continuing to improve in all the areas I’ve focused on. You can always get better.”

Due to the nuances of the center position, Mitchell is a de facto leader on the offense and certainly within his position group. So he’s made himself very aware of the progress of players around him, several of whom are brand new to the program, such as transfers Paki Finau (Washington), Jr Sia (Utah State), and Zak Yamauchi (Stanford), along with 4-star signee Bott Mulitalo, who hails from Lone Peak.

“All of those guys are so much more talented than I was when I first got here, so I’m really excited to see them all develop,” Mitchell humbly observed. “You look at a guy like Bott, and he’s so incredibly talented. He’s put in the work and he’s been very impressive, so if he needs to fill in at any time this next year, I really feel he’ll be ready. I feel the same about just anyone in our position group. It’s a really good and talented group, and they’re all going to be better than me and the other seniors in a few years. I really believe that.”

Good enough to be named First-team All-Big 12 Conference performers? Whether Mitchell admits to it or not, he’s set the bar pretty high for all of them.

But true to form, Mitchell tends to demure almost completely when presented with his own credentials and praise from his teammates.

“I just want to help this team in any way I can,” he said. “That’s always the goal. And to do that you focus on becoming the best player you can be, and hopefully I’ve put in the work necessary to be a better player than I was last year. We’re all learning and working hard to improve, and I really like what I’ve seen from everyone this spring.”
