The early August heat pushed the match to 30-minute periods, instead of the regular 45-minute periods.

First Half

The Blue team tallied the first two shots of the game, a pair of consecutive strikes in the 8th and 9th minute. The first had goalkeeper Chelsea Peterson of the White team at full stretch as Lucy Kesler’s strike missed just wide right of the post. The second came from Ellie Walbruch, who, after a quick turn in the box, saw her shot miss high left. The White team responded four minutes later with a shot of its own, though Kyliegh Hastings’ attempt was off-target.

The White team had the only two corners of the half, with the second producing a scoring opportunity. Off the set piece, the ball bounced off a back post header and found the feet of freshman Brynnli Tolbert, but goalie Sarah Mathis stood tall and made the stop.

The score stood 0-0 at halftime with Blue and White generating 5 shots each, both testing the keeper once with 1 shot on goal apiece.

Second Half

The Blue team began the second half strong, finding the back of the net in the 35th minute. Stringing passes through the midfield the Blue team found an open Kesler on the right wing. Kesler then quickly swung in a cross and cousin Walbruch’s glancing header put the Blue team up 1-0.

White team, looking for an equalizer, threw together a series of passes around the box leading to a dangerous deflection near goal, forcing the Blue team to clear. The White team continued their offensive pressure in the 43rd minute as Emma Neff teed up for a long shot, forcing a comfortable save by keeper Mathis.

With 13 total shots, the Blue team held off late pressure from White team, who finished with 8 total shots, to complete the 1-0 victory.

Bunn big in Canada

CALGARY — BYU men’s golfer Parker Bunn finished eighth among 264 players at the 121st Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship on Thursday at Mickelson National Golf Club, shooting 9-under par (70-67-71-71-279) over 72 holes.

“I played really solid this week at the Canadian Amateur,” Bunn said. “I drove the ball well and stayed in my process no matter what was going on.”

Bunn began the first round with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Another birdie on No. 9 moved him to 4 under before the turn. He added a birdie on No. 12 before making three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 15, 16 and 17 to card a 2-under 70.

Bunn shot a 5-under 67 in the second round, his best round of the championship. The rising sophomore opened with birdies on Nos. 1 and 4 before a bogey on No. 5. He closed the front nine with an eagle on No. 7 to move to 3-under par for the round. Bunn highlighted the back nine with birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 13 and 18, with dropped shots on Nos. 12 and 14, finishing the second round comfortably inside the cut line.

“I had a rough finish the first day, going from 5 under to 2 under, but I am proud of the way I bounced back the next morning,” Bunn said.

Bunn shot back-to-back 1-under 71s in the third and fourth rounds to finish eighth. In the third round, he offset a bogey on No. 3 with a birdie on No. 7. Bunn added birdies on Nos. 11, 16 and 18 and bogeys on Nos. 13 and 17 to card a 1-under 71.

In the final round, Bunn opened with a bogey on the first hole but rebounded with birdies on Nos. 2 and 4. After offsetting a bogey on No. 15 with a birdie on No. 16, he completed the tournament with another 1-under par round of 71.

“Overall, I had a solid week seeing my game progress in a positive way, and I’m excited to get the season started at BYU,” Bunn said.

Bunn improved on his 2025 appearance in the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, finishing with a nine-shot improvement and his first top-10 finish.

Canadian golfer Dawson Lew, 16, shot a 17-under 271 (70-65-67-69) over four rounds to win the championship.
