Making the final push: Pleasant Grove takes a big 1-0 overtime win over Mountain View

Indee Morris’ game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining in Tuesday’s first overtime period was a welcome relief to everyone on Pleasant Grove’s sidelines and certainly to all 11 Viking players on the field, and for good reason.
The goal gave Pleasant Grove its second win in as many nights, this time over a stingy Mountain View team which gave the somewhat ragged and weary Vikings all they could handle.
“Getting that goal was an amazing moment for our team, especially after having to play yesterday,” said Pleasant Grove coach Matt Embley. “We had a very good second half last night, but I told all the girls coming into tonight that it was going to be a battle against a very good Mountain View team, and it definitely was.”
The Vikings dominated possession throughout the match, although it wasn’t until Morris managed to find herself just barely on-sides with nothing but the Bruin’s goalkeeper standing between her and the goal. The junior striker adeptly kicked the ball confidently into the right corner of the net for the golden goal.
Viking players mobbed Morris after, celebrating what Embley believes could prove a pivotal early season win.
“We lost a lot of games in overtime and in PKs last year, so I really challenged the girls going into the overtime period,” he said. “I really encouraged them to finish as strong as they could and to put relentless pressure on Mountain View, and that’s exactly what they did.”
And doing as much certainly wasn’t easy, given it was the second game played by the Vikings in as many nights. A 6-2 win over Northridge the night prior left more than several Pleasant Grove players struggling with their wind late as two full games played back-to-back can certainly take its toll.
After just missing out on several opportunities throughout the first half of play, Pleasant Grove slowly began to cede more possession and subsequent scoring opportunities to Mountain View in the second half. One Bruin counter bounced hard off the post before veteran goalkeeper and BYU commit Savannah Facer scooped up the deflection just outside of the scoring line in what was one of several top plays made by her throughout the match.
“Savannah Facer is just incredible with what she does for us,” Embley said. “She’s the heart of our team and you hear her all game long telling people where to be, and even our forwards. She’s our quarterback in every way. She sees the field like no one else and it was her vision that led to that golden goal. She’s saved us on so many occasions and she’s our ultimate captain. We’re very blessed to have her back there with everything she does.”
As for Morris, she was a welcome addition to this year’s team after spending several years in Florida with her family.
“Her family is from Pleasant Grove, and they just decided it would be best to come back home for Indee’s final two years, and we’re thrilled she’s here,” Embley said. “She’s a big-time player who scored two goals for us against Northridge and then her goal tonight, and she’s going to be someone who makes some big plays with her ability throughout the season.”
As for the season expectations for Pleasant Grove, they’re necessarily high given the vast team experience and general skill level.
“These girls have been playing together for a long time now, and we’re a complete team,” Embley said. “We have four different players score goals for us last night and then six different girls had assists, and you love to see that as a coach. We’re a versatile and deep team and we definitely have high expectations. There’s 13 seniors on this team who have played together since the seventh grade, and they want me to push them. So I’m doing that. I’m challenging them very hard in practice and they’re responding well. So we’re excited to see what we can do this season, and getting a win like this early on is a big thing for us.”
Pleasant Grove will be afforded just one day of rest before returning to the field to take on Provo before playing Timpanogos five days later. Mountain View will look to rebound when it takes on Highland on Thursday.
