Outlook: Expectations always run high at Orem, and fortunately for the Tiger players, their new coach is very familiar with high expectations.

Former Timpview coach Andy Stokes is taking the reigns of the Orem program one season after the Tigers secured a state championship. It’s a spot he’s familiar with, having coached the T-birds to several deep postseason runs, although he recognizes the difficulty.

“The most difficult year to coach is the one when the team is coming off of a state championship,” Stokes said. “The kids can be somewhat complacent because they know they did it. So getting the kids to focus on just this year and forget about last year is always a challenge. They have to earn it this year and last year means nothing.”

Stokes believes the change in the coaching staff, along with the loss of many notable senior performers from last year’s team could prove a benefit with the team’s overall focus. But of course replacing the immense amount of talent Orem had graduate after last season is a challenge.

“We’re talented. The talent here is very good, but we graduated like 35 seniors after last year,” Stokes said. “But what we have back are four starters on the offensive line, which is huge. They’re going to be the key to the whole deal. And then our defensive line looks really strong, so those are two great starting points to figure everything else out.”

What is your favorite team building activity? “We do a lot of service activities,” Stokes said. “The kids go out in the community and they do it every month. We have some great parents who organize it. So it’s great to focus on something and come together when it’s not football. And it also shines a light on them and the great work they can do outside of football.”
