Harvey beat William Love 2 and 1 in the Round of 64 after several lead changes on the front nine.

“It feels great to get through to the next round,” Harvey said. “I’m super excited for the cameras, and hopefully they’ll show me tomorrow. I’m happy for the opportunity to continue playing in this great event.”

Harvey took an early lead on the second hole, but Love responded on No. 3. After Harvey moved to 1 up on No. 5, Love took the sixth and seventh holes to gain a 1-up advantage. The incoming freshman answered by winning consecutive holes on Nos. 8 and 9 to take a 1-up lead at the turn.

Love won No. 11 to square the match, but Harvey claimed back-to-back holes on the 14th and 15th. He maintained the lead to close out the 2-and-1 victory.

“I just tried to bring intensity and not allow my opponent to gain momentum,” Harvey said. “It wasn’t really anything different I did when I got down. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone back home or myself. I got to show everybody I can play.”

Kihei Akina fell to German golfer Finn Koelle in his Round-of-64 match. After splitting the first two holes, Akina took a 2-up lead by winning holes four and five. Koelle claimed No. 6, but Akina responded with a birdie at the eighth to take a 2-up lead into the back nine. Koelle won Nos. 10 and 14 to square the match before taking No. 17 to hand Akina a 1-down loss.

Former Cougar Tyson Shelley lost his Round-of-64 match 3 and 2 to Carson Bertagnole. After falling 2 down early, Shelley leveled the match pars at the sixth and seventh holes. Bertagnole won four holes on the back nine, with Shelley’s only birdie coming at the par-4 14th, ending Shelley’s tournament run.

The championship continues Thursday with the Round of 32 and the Round of 16. Harvey will face Stewart Hagestad at 9:15 a.m. EDT at Merion Golf Club.

Swimming Schedule out

PROVO, Utah – The Cougars announced their 2026-2027 swim and dive meet schedule on Thursday morning.

The Cougars kick off the season Friday, Sep. 18 with the annual Blue vs. White scrimmage at home. BYU then goes on the road to open the regular season at Colorado Mesa for the CMU Shootout on Oct. 2-3 in Grand Junction, Colorado.

After hosting the annual Alumni Meet at home on Oct. 10th, the Cougars are set for a double header weekend visiting UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 16 followed by the MPSF Open Water Championships in Los Angeles on Oct. 17.

BYU then returns home to host a pair of meets in the Richards Building Pool with the women’s team matching up against Utah Tech on Nov. 6 followed by senior night against UNLV on Nov. 7.

After visiting Missouri for the Mizzou Invite on Nov. 17-20, BYU will send qualifiers to the U.S. Open on Dec. 2-5 in Austin, Texas.

The rest of the regular season will feature visits to the Big 12 West Showdown hosted by the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona on Jan. 15-16, the divers competing at Air Force on Jan. 27-30 and a visit to the Ute Natatorium for a matchup against Utah on Feb. 5.

The post season will follow with the Cougars set for the Big 12 Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina on Feb. 23-27. The NCAA Zone E Qualifier held in Flagstaff, Arizona will give the diving team an opportunity to then qualify for the NCAA National Championships to be held in Austin, Texas at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on March 17-24.

BYU returns five of the seven Cougars to earn All-Big 12 honors during the 2025-2026 season with Tanner Nelson, Easton Mousser, Peter Etzold, William Bonnet and Lucy Warnick all returning.

Head coach Tamber Mcallister returns to coach her third season in charge of the Cougars after winning Big 12 Co-coach of the year for the women’s team during the 2024-2025 season.

Uluave on Butkus watch list

CHICAGO — Preseason honors keep rolling in for BYU linebacker Cade Uluave who was today named a candidate for the Butkus Award, presented annually by the Butkus Foundation to the nation’s top collegiate linebacker.

Now in its 42nd year, the Butkus Award recognizes the toughness, instincts, leadership, competitiveness, and football character of Dick Butkus, one of the greatest defensive players in football history.

Uluave, 6-foot-1, 230-pound senior from South Jordan, Utah is in his first year at BYU after transferring from Cal. An All-ACC First-Team linebacker in 2025, he led Cal with 100 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and five quarterback hurries. Over the last three seasons, Uluave played in 34 games for the Bears where he tallied 237 career tackles, 21.5 TFL, six sacks, three interceptions and two forced fumbles.

In addition to earning first-team all-conference honors in 2025, Uluave was All-ACC honorable mention as a sophomore in 2024 and was a first-team Freshman All-American selection by The Athletic, FWAA and College Football News in 2023. He was also named the 2023 Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year, Super West Sports Defensive Freshman of the Year and a Phil Steele All-Pac-12 Third Team honoree.

Earlier this week, Uluave was named to Lombardi Award Watch List and was previously selected as a candidate for the Lott IMPACT Trophy. He was also named preseason All-America by Phil Steele and Athlon Sports and was selected Preseason All-Big 12 by the conference, Phil Steele and Athlon Sports.

Uluave prepped at Mountain Ridge High School in Herriman, Utah, where he was a two-way player. On defense, he registered 154 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, five sacks, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, returning one for a touchdown. On offense, he rushed for 1,638 yards and 26 touchdowns on 290 carries and had 20 catches for 164 yards and one touchdown. He also participated in baseball as well as track and field and earned the Utah Chapter of the National Football Foundation’s Scholar-Athlete Award during his 2021-22 junior academic year.

The 2026 Butkus Award Watch List features 51 linebackers representing 42 colleges and universities from across the country. The list includes representatives from seven conferences, led by the SEC (14), Big 12 (12), Big Ten (12) and ACC (9), with additional representatives from the MAC (1) and Mountain West (1), along with two Independents.

The Butkus Award remains one of college football’s most respected individual honors, recognizing linebackers whose performance reflects the standard established by Dick Butkus more than six decades ago at the University of Illinois and throughout his Hall of Fame NFL career.

Semifinalists for the 2026 Butkus Award will be announced on Oct. 28, finalists on Nov. 20, and the winner will be revealed the week of Dec. 7. Selection will be based on performance throughout the 2026 season.
