BYU's eight captains were announced on Monday. August 31, 2026

PROVO, Utah — BYU football head coach Kalani Sitake today announced the captains and co-captains that make up the program’s Team Leadership Council for the 2026 season.

Voted on by the players, the 20-member Team Leadership Council consists of four offensive and four defensive captains and 12 co-captains, who represent all three phases of the team–offense, defense and special teams.

Senior running back LJ Martin and senior defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa were selected as captains by their peers for the second straight year.

Joining Martin as offensive captains are sophomore quarterback Bear Bachmeier, senior center Bruce Mitchell and junior Oregon transfer tight end Roger Saleapaga II.

Voted as defensive captains along with Tanuvasa are senior linebackers Isaiah Glasker and Cal transfer Cade Uluave as well as senior cornerback Evan Johnson.

Glasker, Bachmeier and Mitchell each served as co-captains on last year’s Leadership Council.

The 12 co-captains for the 2026 season include two repeat selections from last year’s Leadership Council in senior safety Raider Damuni and senior offensive tackle Andrew Gentry.

Other defensive co-captains for 2026 include senior defensive end Bodie Schoonover, senior defensive tackle Justin Kirkland, junior safety Faletau Satuala, junior cornerback Therrian Alexander III and sophomore defensive end Hunter Clegg.

Other offensive co-captains include senior quarterback Treyson Bourguet, senior offensive guard Kyle Sfarcioc, junior receiver Jojo Phillips and junior USC transfer tight end Walker Lyons, while senior kicker Matthias Dunn represents the specialists.

In all, the Team Leadership Council comprises 13 seniors, five juniors and two sophomores.

The Leadership Council meets regularly to plan and fulfill leadership responsibilities for the program, both on and off the field. Four members of the Team Leadership Council will represent the team at the coin toss on the field for every game, while the others will provide leadership in the locker room as the team prepares to take the field.

BYU opens the 2026 season on Saturday when the Cougars host Utah Tech in LaVell Edwards Stadium at 6 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
