With the BYU women’s basketball team’s big win over Utah in the rearview mirror, the Cougar players and Coach Lee Cummard have their eyes squarely on the next task at hand.

That task is a road trip to Kansas which has all of the team’s attention with the Cougars set to take on Kansas tonight at Allen Fieldhouse before traveling 84 miles west to take on Kansas State the following Saturday.

But that’s not to suggest the team has put the win over Utah away completely. Sure, their minds are squarely focused on the task at hand, but as Cummard and his players addressed the media on Monday, they confirmed to have perhaps a bit more pep in their step following Saturday’s thrilling 77-65 comeback win over the Utes.

“Most definitely,” confirmed BYU senior forward Lara Rohkohl. “Especially being a rivalry game that gave us the energy and the push we needed for this week going on the road for a whole week. So yeah, we’re just excited. All of us are ready to go.”

And why wouldn’t Rohkohl and her teammates be following what transpired at the Marriott Center this past Saturday?

After struggling to score just 25 points at the half while being dealt a 10-point deficit, the Cougars put forth great effort on both sides of the court to take a rivalry win which included some unusual yet well-earned celebrations involving an impromptu water fight in the locker room.

“Mostly it was the women of staff versus everybody else, because they never get wet, and the rest of us always get wet,” Cummard said. “But also it’s just a different game in a sense of how it feels when you win, and it’s been a few years since we had won. And just want to make sure that they know it’s an important game to us.”

But that’s all Cummard wanted to focus on, with regards to past accomplishments, even the likes of a win over Utah.

BYU looks to have the edge over the Jayhawks come Wednesday, at least on paper, with the Cougars entering the game with a 16-6  overall record and 5-5 mark in conference play opposed to Kansas having won just three games in conference against eight losses. But at least as far as Cummard is concerned, the Jayhawks to pose a very formidable challenge.

“I told the staff this morning (that when) I look at Kansas’ record, I’m like, man, they’re so talented,” he said. “We got our work cut out for us. I look at that record and it doesn’t match up. So they have my utmost respect and fully aware of how how talented they are and and they pose a huge threat, as far as just some of their players are a hard matchup for us.”

The trip to take on both teams from Kansas presents unique challenges, foremost being an extended time on the road, which will take at least some adjusting to.

“To be out six days or five days, whatever it’s going to end up being, is different,” Cummard said. “So we’re going to have to manage that, but we’ll just focus on the Wednesday game. We’ll get to (Kansas State) after that.”

Gibb one to watch

From BYU sports information:

BYU guard Delaney Gibb was named to the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Midseason Top 10 Watch List, the Basketball Hall of Fame’s Naismith Starting 5 committee announced on Tuesday.
The Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award, first awarded in 2018, is presented annually to the nation’s best shooting guard and is named in honor of Hall of Famer Ann Meyers-Drysdale, a four-time All-American at UCLA.
Gibb was named to the preseason Top-20 watch list on Oct. 28 and joins Baylor guard Tahlia Scott as the only two Big 12 players named to the midseason Top 10. With BYU men’s basketball’s Richie Saunders being named to the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Midseason Top 10, BYU is one of four schools to have a player on both the men’s and women’s shooting guard of the year Top-10 lists.
