As Lehi’s Ashton Shewell checked out of Tuesday’s 97-67 win over Lehi for the final time with just over two minutes remaining, he took a well-deserved drink of refreshment toward the end of the bench. The junior guard then proceeded to attempt to toss the cup into the trash bin, and missed by quite a large margin.
“Man, I always miss when I try to throw that in the garbage,” Shewell quipped following the game.
Turns out, that ill-advised toss of the water cup may have been the only thing Shewell missed during the resounding win.
Shewell shredded the Knights from start to finish during the win, finishing with a team-high 26 points scored, seven rebounds and six assists.
“Ashton is a great scorer, but he does so much more for us, and you saw that tonight,” said Lehi coach Reed Bromley. “He’s an underrated passer, he rebounds, he defends. He’s a great leader for us and he definitely had a great game tonight.”

Of course it wasn’t all about Shewell on Tuesday. He had a lot of help.
Trevor Anderson and Tuk Howe scored 17 and 16 points, respectively with Nate Rosenlof adding 12 and Tillman Huish 10 while passing out a team-high eight assists.
Offensive stats aside, Bromley was quick to point out his team’s defensive effort in limiting the otherwise high-octane Knights, particularly during the game’s early stages.
“Lone Peak is a great team, and we were fortunate that they probably weren’t at their best tonight and missed some shots they normally make, but I like how we defended,” Bromley said. “In this region you take what you can get, and fortunately we were able to play really well tonight while Lone Peak wasn’t at their best. But again, we know that’s a great team over there that’s capable of beating just about anyone.”
As for Lehi, it was clearly at its best from the opening tip until the final buzzer. The overall game set forth worked in at least some contrast to a 59-43 loss the Pioneers took to Davis just four days prior. So how did Bromley’s team manage to more than double its scoring output against a highly-talented an potent Lone Peak team?

“We’ve been talking, as coaches, and we thought that we had a game like tonight in us, from beginning to end,” Bromley said. “The game against Davis was a rough one for us, and I think the kids really focused and we made a lot of shots today. We worked for good looks against Lone Peak’s long defenders, and that’s probably what I was most happy about. We were patient and that’s a key thing we were able to do in going against Lone Peak’s great defense that I think could really help us in the future.”
By residing in a typically ultra-competitive Region 3, Lehi’s future looks to be extremely competitive, to say the least. Games remain versus top teams such as American Fork, two games against Corner Canyon and another game at Lone Peak where the Knights will likely be very keen on exacting some revenge.
But as for Tuesday’s 30-point win, Bromley and his team will certainly take it while enjoying a unique opportunity to sit back and watch some of the team’s more seldom-used players finish out and receive some of the spotlight.
“It’s so great, and especially to have that happen at home,” he said. “All the guys work hard, so to be able to get them out there is something you love to see happen. I was happy about the guys coming off the court staying engaged and really cheering hard for their teammates. One of the more special things were two brothers, Isaac and Derek Smith, being able to play together. Those are the special things you love to see as a coach.”
With the win Lehi improves to 7-9 on the season and will next take on Corner Canyon. Lone Peak falls to 10-8 with the loss and will look to turn things around with a game versus Judge Memorial.
