BYU football’s fall practice session is set to get underway during the first week of August and with it will come a lot of reporting on the preparations for the coming 2026 football season. Several players will receive focus throughout the month of August with more than several of them likely to prove pivotal for the Cougar’s overall success this season.
In the lead-up to the fall football practice session we’ll be previewing 15 such players whose contribution and progress throughout August will very likely play big in determining how successful of a team BYU proves to be in 2026.

Of all the players BYU has to replace this coming season, Tanner Wall may prove to be the toughest. A two-year starter, Wall was the absolute quarterback of the defense and particularly the pass defense where he managed to help limit chunk plays from opposing offenses considerably over the past two seasons.
Wall’s know-how, athletic abilities and overall leadership were all extraordinary and may prove impossible to replace directly.
But that’s not to say the cupboard is bare, and BYU will present two very good and experienced safeties in both Faletau Satuala and Raider Damuni to field this season. Satuala is certainly capable in a lot of capacities, although providing the ultimate umbrella coverage for the Cougar defense isn’t where he’s best utilized. Damuni, meanwhile, showed a lot of progression last season, and could very well rise to provide at least some of the consistent play Wall showed forth last season with his overall abilities and time within the Cougar defensive system.
And then there’s Tommy Prassas, a sophomore who has been beset by injury since he arrived in Provo from the Phoenix area just prior to the 2024 season. Prassas made an instant impact during practice sessions, and was spoken of highly by coaches as someone who could contribute immediately as a true freshman. Coaches proved true to their word as Prassas saw playing time in all 13 games played as a true freshman and contributed 20 total tackles and a fumble recovery in backup duty throughout the 2024 season.
He was set for a bigger role as the team’s primary slot corner for 2025 up until the injury bug struck, limiting his overall contribution considerably.
A big hitter with a tremendous amount of confidence, Prassas is set to compete for a starting role this season where he could be paired with both Satuala and Damuni as coaches work to field their best 11 defenders on the field on most downs. Coaches mentioned throughout the spring practice session that a three-safety look, with both Damuni and Prassas providing primary coverage responsibilities.
The fact that Prassas won the open slot corner starting slot prior to last season indicates that he’s both capable of providing solid man-on-man coverage while performing in a more safety-like capacity. Should Prassas realize his promise while proving healthy, he’ll prove pivotal to the Cougar defense’s overall success this coming season.
