BYU's new associate head golf coach Spencer Dunaway poses with his family

PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s golf head coach Todd Miller announced the hiring of Spencer Dunaway as an associate head coach on Tuesday.

“Spencer Dunaway checks every box of someone I want to work with,” Miller said. “He recognizes that our job is all about the athletes, and he believes in them and gives them every ounce of his energy. He’s incredibly good at making a great impression and impact on everybody he comes in contact with. He is super competitive but within the confines of great sportsmanship.”

“He has worked under three fantastic golf coaches who all sing his praises. His experience will give me and our players valuable insight into the best practices around the country,” Miller added. “If I could choose any coach in the country to work with, I would choose Spencer. I am grateful that with all the coaching offers he received he decided to come back to BYU.”

Dunaway played his entire collegiate career at BYU from 2015-2021. He was a co-champion at the San Diego State Coronado Individual and finished top-5 three times, top-15 six times and top-25 14 times in 38 total outings. Dunaway took part in the 2017 West Coast Conference Championship win, two NCAA Regional events and one NCAA Championship during that span.

“BYU has a special place in my heart and the heart of our family,” Dunaway said. “This is where I found the Gospel, this is where I met my wife, this is the place that helped turn me into the man I am today. Every person has a few key people in their lives that help change your life forever, and Todd Miller is one of those people for me. The opportunity to come and help coach Miller elevate the program to new heights was one that we could not pass up.”

Dunaway earned conference honors as a Cougar which include making the Freshman All-WCC team in 2016 and being a 2017 All-WCC honorable mention. His amateur achievements include winning the Hawaii State Amateur in 2021, reaching the semifinals of the Utah State Amateur in 2019 and 2021, and qualifying for the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach in 2018.

Immediately following his senior season, Dunaway began his coaching stint at Utah Tech as an assistant for a season before spending another season at Utah then three years at UNLV. During his time with the Rebels, he guided them to four team titles, most notably a Mountain West Conference Championship this season and a national championship appearance in 2025.

“I am a players coach first and foremost,” Dunaway said. “I am going to pour everything I have into our guys. I want to help them achieve all of their dreams and aspirations. We are going to graduate leaders, win championships, and excel in all that we do. Lauren and I are so excited to be coming home. Go Cougs.”

The Mililani, Hawaii native graduated from BYU in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Spencer Dunaway married Lauren Harker, a native from Draper, Utah, in July 2020 in the Draper Utah Temple. Spencer was baptized during his time at BYU. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Dec. 8, 2018. He was baptized by his former teammate Brock Stanger.

His wife Lauren was a four-year student-athlete at BYU. She was a member of the BYU cheer team from 2015-2019. They welcomed their first child on March 5th, 2026, a baby boy named Miller.

Cougars add David Liechty

BYU men’s golf head coach Todd Miller announced the addition of former Utah Tech golfer David Liechty to the roster for the 2026-27 season on Wednesday.

“David was one of those kids that came on late in his high school career,” Miller said. “He is strong, has a gorgeous golf swing, and he knows how to win. His performance at the US Amateur last summer perked a lot of interest in different coaches. I am very glad that I will have the opportunity to coach him during his career at BYU. I believe he will make a big impact on our team next season.”

Hailing from Layton, Utah, the incoming sophomore competed in all 11 team events for Utah Tech during his rookie season. Liechty accrued a 71.67 scoring average and two individual victories, the first multi-medalist in the Trailblazers’ brief period in NCAA Division I.

Liechty was a two-time WAC Player of the Week and selected to the all-WAC first team in his debut collegiate season.

“I chose BYU because it is a highly competitive program that shares my values,” Liechty said. “I believe it is a place I can continue to develop as a golfer and grow in all aspects of my life. I’m excited to be part of a program with such a strong legacy of success and I feel I can help the team reach an even higher level. Thanks to Coach Miller for the opportunity. Go Cougs.”

Liechty has collected amateur accomplishments in addition to his early collegiate success. He became the first Utah Tech player in its program history to qualify for match play at the 2025 U.S Amateur at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

He won the 2025 Talons Cove Amateur, 2023 Copper Rock Amateur and 2022 Southern Utah Open. This year, he claimed the UGA Winterchamps crown at Copper Rock Golf Club which included an 11-under 61 in the opening round, the lowest competitive round score ever at the course. Liechty was a 2025 Utah State Amateur semifinalist and 2023 runner-up.

While at Layton High School, he was a four-year letterwinner and helped lead its golf program to fifth place in 2022. Liechty won regional medalist honors in 2021.

Right after graduating high school, Liechty served a two-year service mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before he began his collegiate career.
