Provo’s Tony Haro has a flare for the dramatic, along with a superior ability to find the back of the net from long range.
And that’s very much a good thing for resurgent Bulldogs.
On Monday, with Provo locked in a 2-2 tie with Mountain, Haro lined up a kick from 30 yards out and with just 2:18 remaining on the clock. The senior unleashed a strong kick that snuck just underneath the crossbar in the far upper corner for the game-winning goal.
His team celebrated the kick in earnest after, exuberant in taking a third-straight win over Region 8 foes, and did so again in dramatic fashion.
“We weren’t playing good at that point, but I told my team to just get me the ball off of a set piece and I just ripped it,” Haro said. “It’s all about practicing, and I’ve been practicing kicks like that since I was young.”

Practice does make perfect, and according to Provo coach Jonathan Ware, Haro scoring from long range is sort of what the senior striker does.
“It was just last game where he had another one from 30 yards out,” Ware said. “So it’s his second one this year and hopefully we can get even some more from him. Both of them were great kicks.”
Provo’s win before Monday’s thriller was a 3-3 shootout win over Timpanogos, and the win before the win over the Timberwolves was yet another 3-3 shootout win over Orem. So yeah, taking tight wins over region foes has sort of become the norm for the Bulldogs so far this season.
And that’s a good thing, all factors considered.
On Monday versus the Bruins the Bulldogs set the pace early, using goals from Diego Reyes and Giancarlo Galeas to forge a 2-0 lead at the half. The Bruins stormed back, however, scoring goals with just over 30 minutes remaining, and then a tying goal with just over six minutes left on the clock.

But the Bulldogs have been there before and didn’t panic.
“It’s a team of fighters and that’s why we’re able to take these tight games. They never give up,” Ware assessed. “We’re young at a lot of positions, but those young guys play with so much energy and heart that it makes up a lot for some of the mistakes they make out there.”
Leaders on Provo’s team include Jared Cortes, Haro, Greene and Leo Mendoza, among others.
“We have a great group of guys with high character,” Ware said. “We depend on our seniors and they’ve done a great job leading our team so far.”
With the win Provo improves to 7-3 on the season after picking off the three best teams in Region 8 in the view of Ware.

“It sets some great momentum and gives us a good cushion entering the rest of the season,” he said. “So we’re grateful for this win tonight and hopefully we keep building off of this, knowing we can beat the best teams in our region.”
Indeed Provo has its eyes set beyond just beating tough Region 8 opponents.
“We’re coming together,” Haro said. “We lost some great players from last year, but we’ve been putting in the work and we’re progressing to become one of the best teams in 4A, and it’s been a lot of fun playing this year.”
