Westlake senior striker Andrew Morgan scored five goals during the Thunder’s 6-0 win over Cedar Valley on Tuesday.

And yes, you read that right.

Entering his final game to be played on his home field, Morgan had tallied eight goals through 16 games played this season. Sure, he’s been a central piece to the Thunder’s impressive season play, although Tuesday’s goal-scoring extravaganza was truly extraordinary and absolutely special.

“It was magical. I just put the ball in the back of the net and had a game,” Morgan said. “I didn’t know I had it in me, but I’ve been here for four years, and this is exactly how I pictured the end of it.”

And in so doing he introduced soccer fans to the term ‘glut,’ which is the term assigned to any single player scoring five goals in a game. It’s a term very rarely used and unlikely to be used to describe any soccer player’s performance any time soon.

“I think I may have scored five goals back when I was nine years old back in city league. I honestly don’t remember,” Morgan said. “But being here with my family, my friends … ending it here at Westlake was so special and something I’ll never forget.”

Morgan struck his first two goals consecutively in the first half before fellow senior Ty Christensen topped off the half with one of his own, giving the Thunder a 3-0 lead into the half. No one relented in the second half, although it just happened to be Morgan finding himself open on multiple occasions to add three more to his total in a feat that’s unlikely to be matched any time soon.

“He opened up today and I really don’t know exactly why it happened that way, but it was really fun to watch,” said Westlake coach Don Bastian. “He just really attacked the goal tonight with poise. Oftentimes you rush it when you get it close to the goal, but tonight he showed that poise, hit it on frame, and you saw the results. It was amazing.”

And unexpected given how Westlake typically distributes the ball.

“If you look at our team before tonight, we’ve had several players score between three and six goals,” Bastian said. “Every player on our team plays a big role, and Andrew is certainly one of those players who plays a big role and is a leader for us.”

Top scorers for Westlake, other than Morgan, include Arthur Malazzo (8 goals), Daniel Madrona (7), Ty Christensen (6), and Grady DeVries (6.) All players gladly defer to one another when the occasion arises with it simply being Morgan’s turn during Tuesday’s goal-scoring explosion.

“We have great captains and every game it’s someone else’s turn, which is what you want,” Bastian said. “It’s a lot of fun and the focus tonight was on the seniors, and we made sure that our entire lineup was seniors at the end there, and all of them have contributed so much to our team’s success through the years.”

“It’s been a blast this year,” Morgan added. ” … We’ve been really spread out this year and we know how to work together. It’s something special that I don’t think we’ve had here at Westlake for a while.”

With the win Westlake finishes off the season with a 12-5 record with eyes firmly fixed on a deep run in the 6A state championships with everyone involved feeling as optimistic as ever following Tuesday’s regular season finale.

“We have great chemistry and we’ve been relatively healthy this season, which is always a big thing,” Bastian said. “We had one player unfortunately break his ankle, which was tough, but other than that, we’re feeling great. And I feel we’re peaking at exactly the right time.”

Indeed Westlake enters the 6A championships on the heels of winning six of its final seven games versus tough Region 2 competition.

“From the start we believed we could do it, and now it’s our turn to finish the job,” Morgan concluded.
