BYU roundup: Cougars defeat Utah Valley 13-3, names new gymnastic coaching assistants

BYU wrapped up its non-conference regular season with a 13-3 seven inning win over Utah Valley on Tuesday night at Larry H. Miller Field.

“It means a lot to win this one.” Ezra McNaughton said, “We need all the momentum we can going into the weekend series against Kansas. Playing a team like Utah Valley that is just down the road always gets the energy going. The in-state games are a lot of fun to play in.”

BYU (26-25, 13-14 Big 12) outhit UVU (16-36, 2-13 WAC) 13-8 to win the game in seven innings behind a fourth inning surge of seven runs.

The Cougars opened the game with a double play before allowing a UVU solo home run for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Luke Anderson singles to right field and McNaughton followed with a home run off the video board in right field to give BYU a 2-1 lead.

After holding the Wolverines scoreless in the fourth Matt Hansen walked and scored on a Parker Goff RBI double to deep left field putting BYU up 5-2. Hurdsman was then hit by a pitch and an Anderson single loaded the bases. McNaughton then hit a sacrifice fly to score Goff, Bryker Hurdsman and Anderson advanced a base on a throwing error. Robinson then deleivered an RBI single into left field, sending Hurdsman home and Anderson to third to push the BYU lead to 7-2.

BYU then ended the game in the top of the seventh holding the Wolverines scoreless in the inning ending the game in a ten run rule.

BYU welcomes No. 17 ranked Kansas to Provo, May 14-16, for the final regular-season Big 12 series of the year. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+. The games will also be available on the BYU Radio app, BYUradio.org, SiriusXM 143 and 107.9 FM in Utah County. The Thursday and Friday games are schedule for 6 p.m. MDT, with the Saturday contest slated for 1 p.m. MDT.

BYU Gymnatsics names new assistant coaches

Newly named BYU gymnastics head coach Natalie Broekman announced that Brogan Evanson and MaKenna Giles will remain on staff as assistant coaches, with Evanson also serving as the associate head coach.

“I’m absolutely thrilled that Brogan and Makenna will be by my side as we enter the next era of BYU gymnastics excellence,” Broekman said. “We each have our unique strengths, skill sets and talents, and we are aligned in our vision of what this program will be for our incredible student-athletes. Brogan’s ability to create well-organized systems will be vital to our recruiting efforts. Makenna’s background at a high-level gymnastics program will help us raise the bar technically. We will look familiar to many BYU gymnastics fans, and with some role changes and renewed excitement, this coaching staff is built for big things ahead.”

Evanson and Giles will assist in a variety of areas within the program, including student-athlete development, recruiting, summer camps, team promotion, community outreach, competitions and alumni relations.

Evanson joined the BYU coaching staff alongside Broekman in 2015 and has served as the team’s vault and floor coach, as well as floor choreographer.

Prior to BYU, Evanson served as program director and head coach at Peak Athletics in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. She also worked as an assistant coach for the Southeast Missouri Redhawks, earning 2007 Co-Midwest Independent Conference Assistant Coach of the Year honors.

As a member of the BYU gymnastics team from 2001-04, Evanson earned numerous accolades and finished ranked No. 14 nationally on uneven bars in 2004. She also recorded a 9.975 on bars against Utah, setting a school record.

Giles was a two-time All-American at the University of Utah from 2016-19. She served as a volunteer assistant coach at BYU from 2022-23 and will enter her third season as an assistant coach with the Cougars.

As a student-athlete at Utah, Giles was a team captain, Pac-12 vault champion, WCGA Scholar All-American and recipient of Utah’s Most Outstanding Senior Female Student-Athlete award.
