With the 6A state championship all but secured for Lone Peak during its eventual 3-1 win over Farmington on Friday, the Knights, and specifically Patrick Stevenson, weren’t quite finished.
Stevenson had scored the go-ahead goal just five minutes prior, sure, but rather than being content to just let the clock run out, the senior striker wasn’t quite ready to end things the way they were. Instead he worked his way toward the goal to boot his third goal of the day through with just over 10 seconds remaining as the Lone Peak crowd and his teammates celebrated raucously.
“We don’t want to settle for like ordinary, we want to be extraordinary,” Stevenson summed up behind his 3-goal effort and Lone Peak winning its first boys soccer championship in 21 years. ” … It’s just this team is about. I mean everybody just has so much passion on this team and the boys love each other. We’re always keeping each other up, lifting each other up (with) positive affirmations and we just keep fighting.”
Closing goals aside, Friday’s game played out much like you’d expect during a championship match.
Farmington managed to take an early lead with a goal booted through Jake Burrup before Stevenson answered with his first goal scored during the afternoon to tie things up right before the half. The second half saw Lone Peak’s chances steadily increase over the Phoenix throughout the second half of play and came to a crescendo over the final 10 minutes of play.

Crossbars were hit and posts saw balls narrowly drift away outside them before Stevenson finally got one through with just over five minutes remaining. Several minutes came the aforementioned topper, giving Stevenson his hat trick and polishing off his prep soccer career in the best way imaginable.
“It’s something I couldn’t imagine,” Stevenson said. “I mean, on my way here in the bus I’m just visualizing myself scoring that hat trick so, it’s become a reality and I’m so, so happy.”
As for his mentality to top off his already stellar afternoon, Stevenson said, “I saw a space to shoot it … I got it over the keeper and I was just hoping he wouldn’t get it and he didn’t.”
Of course Lone Peak’s championship effort was about far more than one player, which Stevenson was quick to point out during the media crush at the end of the match. One of the players central in the win was Lone Peak goalkeeper Sam Parker, who overcame giving up an early goal to provide more than several big saves in highlighting a stellar defensive effort.
“He doesn’t let those moments get him down,” said Lone Peak coach Kyle Hartman. “I told him today, ‘Sam, you get scored on, who cares? Let’s get the ball. Let’s get reset and go.’ One moment doesn’t define a game, right? It’s many moments over 80 minutes, and we just got to remember that. Just stick with it. Whatever opposition comes, we just got to fight it head-on and stay together as a team. And if we do that, we’ll be just fine.”

As for Stevenson, Hartman said it was a bit of an uncommon effort from Lone Peak’s leader.
“Patrick is one of the most humble soccer players I’ve ever met with his skill level. He’s all about the team,” Hartman said. “He’s not about himself. He’d rather three other guys score goals than himself, but I told him before this game, I said, ‘Patrick, you got to put the team on your back. This is your moment. You’ve had this for four years. You’ve lost three years in a row in the state tournament. This is your chance.'”
Stevenson didn’t let that moment pass him by, as it were in providing a hat trick that will be remembered for some time.
“We’ll be remembered for a very long time,” Stevenson concluded. “We left our mark this year and I’m so proud of the boys and coaches. We got new coaching staff this year, and they’ve just been amazing. So, it all started from them.”
