The Timpanogos girls soccer team is steadily getting more healthy with every week, and it’s beginning to show.

With Thursday’s 3-1 win over Provo providing the latest piece of evidence, positive vibes abound for the upstart Timberwolves who improved their record to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in Region 8 competition.

“We’re starting to get everybody back. We still don’t have everybody back, but we are starting to get everybody back and things are starting to click,” said Timpanogos coach Natalyn Lewis. “And I give all the credit to these girls because it’s the way that they are working together and really have a great attitude.”

The Timberwolves began the season with five significant injuries, according to Lewis, with all but two of those five have made returns over the past few weeks. The return of all three is helping promote better overall play with the hope that the eventual return of everyone will push Timpanogos to even new heights.

“We’re hoping to get everyone back by next week, and that’s going to be great for all of us,” Lewis said.

Proving great during Thursday’s match was junior midfielder Maddi Searle, who scored two impressive first half goals to give the Timberwolves a 2-0 lead at the break. On similar yet separate occasions the strong-footed junior unleashed balls a considerable distance from the goal and managed to locate both shots in optimal positions just under the crossbar.

“Maddie has just a gorgeous shot, and I’m proud of her,” Lewis said. “Those were two beautiful shots. She did a great job putting the ball away tonight. And then we had so many more opportunities, and the great part about it is we’re really young up top, and I think as the season progresses, those shots are going to fall.”

Overall Lewis assessed it was an overall strong performance by her team against what she regards as a very dangerous Provo team.

“I was really happy with my team in terms of our just ability to find the seams and get in behind and create opportunities,” Lewis said. “I liked the movement off the ball and the hustle in the middle. Provo has a very good midfield — rock solid, and our middies stepped up to the challenge tonight to face them. I’m also really proud of just our attack and our defense stepping through the middle, our middle connecting to the forwards, and our forwards finding the seams. That was the game plan, and I felt like they executed well.”

Timpanogos’ final goal was booted through by freshman Makenna Vawdrey, which was celebrated in earnest by her teammates considering it was the young midfielder’s first goal of her career. But so earnest was the celebration that the team perhaps lost a bit of focus and yielded a goal to the Bulldogs just one minute later and with just three minutes remaining in the game.

“We got caught celebrating a little bit much,” Lewis admitted. “It was her first goal of the season, and what I love about my team, honestly, is they just lit up for her. They were so excited for her that is caused them to let down that let a goal in! But we’re all right, right? We’re all right, and while we certainly don’t want to give up a goal like that, it’s great that our players can be so excited for one another.”

Timpanogos’ overall excitement was palpable throughout the game’s 80 minutes with some observers making the type of comment that was music to Lewis’ ears.

“Somebody on the sideline was walking past our girls while they were warming up, and she said, ‘They look joyful,'” Lewis concluded. “And I think that’s the key, right? If we’re out here being miserable, we have a problem. This is a game, and they’re in high school, and they need to enjoy every second of it. And these girls are finding some joy in the game, and that’s what you love to see as a coach.”
