By Daily Herald - | Aug 27, 2001

PROVO — The 2001 high school hockey season began last Thursday at The Peaks Ice Arena. Mountain View, Timpanogos and Utah County Independent began the season with victories.

Mountain View beat Wasatch 8-2, Timpanogos topped Alta 3-2 and Utah County Independent blasted Riverton 9-1.

For Mountain View, Devin Strong had a hat trick (three goals) and one assist. Cody Strong and Jeff Strong had two goals each and Cody also had an assist. Adam Hickman added a goal and three assists, Jared Kemp had two assists and Eric Wendt had one.

The game was Wasatch’s debut in the high school hockey league. Darrin Caldwell and Andy Fuchs scored for Wasatch.

Timpanogos rallied from a 2-1 first-period deficit to score twice in the second period for the victory. Bobby Cohoon had two goals and Todd Jaramillo scored the other goal. Case Rasmussen and Clint Moore each had one assist.

Utah County Independent goalie Cody Madsen had a shutout until Rivertson scored in the final 20 seconds. Kevin Vance had a hat trick for Utah County, while Jason Nostrom, John Vance, Kyle Larson, Conner Parry, Tanner Cupua and Jeremy Eisenstat added one goal each.

Play continues at the Peaks Thursday. Mountain View (1-0) faces Alta (0-1) at 6 p.m. Timpanogos (1-0) battles Riverton (0-1) at 7:30 and Spanish Fork takes on Springville at 9 p.m. in the season opener for both teams.

UTAH BLITZZ: The Utah Blitzz continued their playoff run, defeating the Stanislaus United Cruisers, 3-0, in the USL D-3 Pro League national semifinal match in Provo last week.

The Blitzz looked a little out of sync to begin the game, having not played a game in 20 days since winning the regular-season division crown. The Blittz defense played well, holding Stanislaus at bay until the offense picked up.

With 44 minutes, Utah’s B.J. McNicol was fouled inside the penalty area, which resulted in a Blitzz penalty kick. Team captain Adolfo Ovalle scored on Stanislaus keeper J.J. Wosniak for a 1-0 lead.

Fadi Afash tacked on another goal in the 65th minute to increase the lead. He scored again in the 86th minute for the final margin.

The Blitzz advance to the D-3 Pro League national finals. They play the Greenville Lions Saturday at FranklinCovey Field on the BYU campus. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth 17 and under.

AUTO RACING: Nathan Christensen of Orem continues to dominate the AIS Super Super Mini Cup Division at the Rocky Mountain Raceways.

Christensen, 18, has 645 total points this season and is solidly in first place. David Adamson remains in second place with 608 points.
