It’s hard to slow down a really good high school basketball player.

When a team has two of them, like Skyridge does, and both get going — well, that is a recipe for success.

The Falcons got big performances from junior forward Trevon Snoddy and sophomore guard Duncan Reid as they rolled past Springville, 71-54, in Tuesday night’s Region 8 game in Lehi.

“We played tough,” Skyridge head coach Jeff Gardner said. “Springville is a well-coached team and always plays gritty. Every time we thought we might be able to blow it open, they hit some big shots and stayed in the game.”

Snoddy led the way for the Falcons, tallying 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Reid tacked on 20 points including three 3-pointers.

“We had a good inside-out game,” Gardner said. “Our guards played well on the perimeter and Duncan hit some big shots. Trevon is a special player. He has a great basketball IQ and the ability to stay under control. He can face up and drive by you or post you up. He’s a tough player to guard and he doesn’t get rattled.”

The home team built a double-digit lead early in the second quarter, then extended it to go up 28-14.

But the Red Devils put together a little run scoring eight of the next 10 points to get the Skyridge lead to eight.

The Falcons — as they did all night — answered by scoring four straight points before halftime to maintain the momentum at the break.

Springville closed to within nine in the third quarter at 38-29 but an 8-0 Skyridge run punctuated by a Snoddy dunk kept the Falcons firmly in control.

Red Devil junior guard Cooper Riggs led the way for his team with 20 points, including five treys.

With the victory, Skyridge completed the sweep of the first half of Region 8 competition and Gardner likes where his team is at.

“We know we are facing five tough games on the back end,” he said. “But I’m pleased. We have a good group of seniors and I’m excited to see where we can go.”

The Falcons (14-4, 5-0) will put that perfect league record on the line when they play at Provo on Friday, while Springville (6-11, 1-4) next plays at Timpanogos on the same evening.

Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
