Best of the Best: 2021 All-Valley Volleyball Team
VOLLEYBALL ALL-VALLEY 2021
Player of the Year: Jayda Tupea, Sr. OH, Lone Peak
Tupea did it all for the 6A champions, playing six rotations and becoming the emotional leader of the team. Her improvement from her junior season made her a dangerous option on offense and a steady passer and defender as well. Tupea was second on the team in kills with 259 (2.5 per set), second in digs with 302 (2.9 per set) and handled 608 service receptions at nearly a 90 percent rate.
Offensive MVP: Taliah Lee, Jr. OH, Timpview
Lee was an offensive force for the T-Birds, leading Class 5A in kills with 421 (4.2 per set) and hitting .265. She also added 37 aces and 206 digs. The good news for Timpview fans is Lee will return for her senior year in 2022.
Defensive MVP: Avery Fowler, Sr. L, Pleasant Grove
The “Resuscitator” kept plays alive for the Vikings all year long and her all-out effort was an inspiration to her teammates. Fowler finished with 409 digs (4.1 per set) and handled 440 service receptions at a 93 percent rate.
Setter of the Year: Silina Damuni, Jr. S, Timpview
Damuni – a BYU commit – continues to be one of the top setters in the West with her speed and ability to find her teammates in the right place. In 2021, Damuni was second in 5A in assists with 940 (9.4 per set) while leading Timpview to a team hitting percentage of .291. She added 92 kills while hitting .320, 48 aces, 58 block assists and 274 digs in leading the T-Birds to the state semifinals.
Libero of the Year: Brielle Miller, Jr., L, Mountain View
A big key to Mountain View’s run to the state final was Miller’s steady and sometimes spectacular passing and defense. The junior finished with 502 digs (3.9 per set) with 320 serve receptions at a 92 percent rate.
Coach of the Year: Reed Carlson, Lone Peak
Carlson has won five titles in six years, including a 3-1 victory against Pleasant Grove in this year’s Class 6A finals. The Knights posted a 27-5 record after opening the season with two losses. Lone Peak will likely send six players from this year’s team on to the next level, a true measure of just how well Carlson and his staff develop the players in his program.
