BYU Football Opponent Power Rankings: Utah has big Pac-12 showdown with Oregon

Here’s our weekly ranking of BYU football’s opponents with a look at their schedules and matchups.

1. No. 11 Baylor (8-2 overall, 5-2 Big 12)

Results: Baylor’s defense came up big, holding No. 8 Oklahoma to just 260 total yards, in a 27-14 victory.

Game On: Saturday at Kansas State (7-3 overall, 4-3 Big 12), 3:30 p.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? Deuce Vaughn ran for 121 yards and a touchdown to lead Kansas State to a 34-17 victory against West Virginia. … The series between Baylor and Kansas State is tied at 9-9 but the Bears have won the past three meetings and seven of the past nine.

2. No. 24 Utah (7-3 overall, 6-1 Pac-12 South)

Results: TJ Pledger ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns as the Utes held on for a 38-29 victory against Arizona.

Game On: Saturday vs. No. 4 Oregon (9-1 overall, 6-1 Pac-12 North), 5:30 p.m. MT (ABC)

What’s Up? Anthony Brown ran for 123 yards and a touchdown in a 38-24 Oregon victory against Washington State. … The Ducks lead the series with Utah 23-10, including a 37-15 victory in the Pac-12 Championship Game in 2019.

3. Utah State (8-2 overall, 5-1 MWC Mountain)

Results: Logan Bonner threw four touchdown passes and Utah State held San Jose State to just 150 total yards in a 48-17 road victory.

Game On: Saturday vs. Wyoming (5-5 overall, 1-5 MWC Mountain), 6 p.m. MT (CBSSN)

What’s Up? Wyoming dropped a 23-13 decision to Boise State, the Cowboys 15th loss in the past 16 games with the Broncos. … Utah State leads the overall series with Wyoming 40-26-4 and have the past two meetings.

4. Arizona State (7-3 overall, 5-2 Pac-12 South)

Results: Rachaad White rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns and Arizona State erased an early 14-0 deficit in a 35-30 victory against Washington.

Game On: Saturday at Oregon State (6-4 overall, 4-3 Pac-12 North), 8:30 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? Chance Nolan accounted for three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) to lead Oregon State past Stanford 35-14 to become bowl eligible. … Arizona State leads the overall series with Oregon State 30-14-1 with the Sun Devils winning last year 46-33 and the Beavers taking a 35-34 win in 2019.

5. Virginia (6-4 overall, 4-2 ACC Coastal)

Results: Virginia managed just 278 total yards against No. 9 Notre Dame in a 28-3 loss.

Game On: Saturday at No. 20 Pitt (8-2 overall, 5-1 ACC Coastal), 1:30 p.m. MT (ESPN2)

What’s Up? Pittsburgh topped North Carolina 30-23 in overtime last Saturday. … The Panthers an the Cavaliers will battle for the ACC Coastal lead. … Pittsburgh leads the overall series with Virginia 8-4 but the Cavaliers won last season 30-14.

6. Boise State (6-4 overall, 4-2 MWC Mountain)

Results: George Holani rushed for 102 yards and the Boise State defense forced a late turnover to hold off Wyoming 23-13.

Game On: Saturday vs. New Mexico (3-7 overall, 1-5 MWC Mountain), 7 p.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? New Mexico totaled just 196 yards of offense (just 34 passing) in a 34-7 loss to Fresno State. …Boise State has won 10 of the 11 meetings with the Lobos. New Mexico’s only win in the series came in 2015 (31-24) at Boise.

7. USC (4-5 overall, 3-4 Pac-12 South)

Plays BYU: Nov. 27 in Los Angeles

Results: Bye

Game On: Saturday vs. UCLA (6-4 overall, 4-3 Pac-12 South), 2 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? UCLA topped Colorado 44-20 as the Bruins became bowl eligible for the first time in four years. … USC leads the overall series with UCLA 49-7-32 and has won five of the past six meetings.

8. Washington State (5-5 overall, 4-3 Pac-12 North)

Results: Jayden De Laura threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns but also had two interceptions in a 38-24 loss to No. 3 Oregon.

Game On: Friday vs. Arizona (1-9 overall, 1-6 Pac-12 South), 7 p.m. MT (Pac-12 Network)

What’s Up? Arizona put a scare into Utah by scoring on a blocked punt in the fourth quarter but lost 38-29. … The Wildcats lead the overall series 27-17 but the Cougars won the last meeting 69-28 at Pullman in 2018.

9. Georgia Southern (3-7 overall, 2-5 Sun Belt East)

Results: Jalen White ran for two touchdowns and Georgia Southern held off Texas State 38-30.

Game On: Saturday vs. No. 14 BYU (8-2), 2 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? Georgia Southern snapped a four-game losing streak with its victory against Texas State. … BYU and the Eagles have never played in football.

10. South Florida (2-8 overall, 1-5 AAC)

Results: Desmond Ridder threw two touchdown passes to break Cincinnati’s career record to help the No. 2 Bearcats to a 45-28 victory against South Florida.

Game On: Saturday at Tulane (1-9 overall, 0-6 AAC), 10 a.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? Tulane forced four turnovers but lost in overtime to Tulsa 20-13. … The Bulls and the Green Wave have split two meetings with Tulane winning 41-15 in 2018.

11. Arizona (1-9 overall, 1-6 Pac-12 South)

Results: Arizona blocked a punt for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull within two points at 31-29 but missed the two-point conversion and Utah escaped with a 38-29 victory.

Game On: Friday at Washington State (4-6 overall, 3-4 Pac-12 North), 7 p.m. MT (Pac-12 Network)

What’s Up? Oregon forced three turnovers and held off Washington State for a 38-24 victory. … The Cougars beat Arizona 69-28 at Pullman in 2018 and the Wildcats rolled to a 58-37 victory at Tucson in 2017.

12. Idaho State (1-9 overall, 1-7 Big Sky)

Results: Cal Poly kicked a 41-yard field goal with four seconds left to hold off Idaho State 32-29.

Game On: Saturday vs. Idaho (3-7 overall, 2-5 Big Sky), 1 p.m. MT

What’s Up? Idaho is coming off a 20-13 loss at No. 3 Montana State. … The first meeting in this series was in 1916. … The Vandals lead the overall series 29-13 but ISU won in April by a 24-22 score.
