BYU Football Opponent Power Rankings: Pac-12 South goes to Utah

Here’s our weekly ranking of BYU football’s opponents with a look at their schedules and matchups.

1. No. 9 Baylor (9-2 overall, 6-2 Big 12)

Results: Redshirt freshman Blake Sharpen replaced an injured Gerry Bohanon at quarterback and completed 16 of 21 for 137 yards and the defense smothered Kansas State in a 20-10 Baylor victory.

Game On: Saturday vs. Texas Tech (6-5 overall, 3-5 Big 12), 10 a.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? Oklahoma State held Texas Tech to just 108 total yards in a 23-0 shutout victory. … The overall series between Baylor and Texas Tech is tied 39-39-1, with the Red Raiders earning a 24-23 victory last season.

2. No. 16 Utah (8-3 overall, 7-1 Pac-12 South)

Results: Britain Covey returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown and Utah shut down No. 4 Oregon’s run game in a 38-7 victory.

Game On: Friday vs. Colorado (4-7 overall, 3-5 Pac-12 South), 2 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? Colorado created four turnovers, including an 88-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Jack Lamb, in a 20-17 victory against Washington. … The overall series between Utah and Colorado is tied at 32-32-3, though the Utes have won the past four meetings.

3. Boise State (7-4 overall, 5-2 MWC Mountain)

Results: Boise State held New Mexico to just 96 total yards in a 37-0 shutout victory.

Game On: Friday at No. 22 San Diego State (10-1 overall, 6-1 MWC West), 10 a.m. MT (CBS)

What’s Up? San Diego State needed a touchdown in the final three minutes to subdue UNLV 28-20. … The series between Boise State and the Aztecs is tied at 3-3, with San Diego State winning in 2018 19-13.

4. Utah State (8-3 overall, 5-2 MWC Mountain)

Results: Titus Swen ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns – one of 43 yards and another of 98 yards – to lead Wyoming to a 44-17 victory against Utah State.

Game On: Friday at New Mexico (3-8 overall, 1-6 MWC Mountain), 11 a.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? New Mexico has lost eight of its past nine games after a 37-0 loss to Boise State. … Utah State leads the overall series with the Lobos 14-13 and has won the past four meetings.

5. Arizona State (7-4 overall, 5-3 Pac-12 South)

Results: Oregon State held Arizona State to just 266 total yards and forced a pair of turnovers in a 24-10 victory.

Game On: Saturday vs. Arizona (1-10 overall, 1-7 Pac-12 South), 2 p.m. MT (Pac-12 Network)

What’s Up? Arizona’s only win this season came in Week 9 against a COVID-depleted Cal team, 10-3. … The Wildcats lead the overall “Duel in the Desert” series 49-44-1, though the Sun Devils have won the past four meetings.

6. Washington State (6-5 overall, 5-3 Pac-12 North)

Results: Jayden de Laura threw four touchdown passes and Max Borghi rushed for 139 yards and two scores as Washington State became bowl eligible with a 44-18 victory against Arizona.

Game On: Thursday at Washington (4-7 overall, 3-5 Pac-12 North), 6 p.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? A week after firing its head coach, Jimmy Lake, Washington lost a 20-17 decision to Colorado. … The Huskies have a commanding 74-32-6 lead in the Apple Cup and have won seven in a row. … The last Washington State win in the series came in 2012.

7. Virginia (6-5 overall, 4-3 ACC Coastal)

Results: Jordan Addison caught 14 passes for 202 yards and four touchdowns as No. 18 Pitt outscored Virginia 48-38.

Game On: Saturday vs. Virginia Tech (5-6 overall, 3-4 ACC Coastal), 1:45 p.m. MT (ACC Network)

What’s Up? Less that a week after firing head coach Justin Fuente, Virginia Tech lost to Miamia 38-26. … The Hokies led the overall series with Virginia 59-38-5, with the Cavaliers’ 39-30 victory at Charlottesville in 2019 ending a 15-game losing streak.

8. USC (4-6 overall, 3-5 Pac-12 South)

Results: Dorian Thompson-Robinson passed for 349 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for two more as UCLA hammered USC 62-33.

Game On: Saturday vs. No. 13 BYU (9-2), 8:30 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? BYU took care of Georgia Southern 34-17 behind 312 passing yards and two touchdowns from Jaren Hall. … USC leads the overall series with the Cougars 2-1 but BYU won the last meeting (30-27 in overtime in 2019).

9. Georgia Southern (3-8 overall, 2-6 Sun Belt East)

Results: Georgia Southern trailed No. 14 BYU just 20-17 at halftime but went scoreless the rest of the game and lost 34-17.

Game On: Saturday at Appalachian State (9-2 overall, 6-1 Sun Belt East), 12:30 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? Chase Brise threw three touchdown passes to lead Appalachian State to a 45-7 victory against Troy. … The Mountaineers lead the overall series with Georgia Southern 19-15-1 and won the last meeting at Statesboro 34-26.

10. South Florida (2-9 overall, 1-6 AAC)

Results: Freshman Michael Pratt passed for a career-high 311 yards and three touchdowns as Tulane beat up on South Florida 45-17.

Game On: Friday at Central Florida (7-4 overall, 4-3 AAC), 1 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? Freshman Mike Keane thew a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score as Central Florida crushed UConn 49-17. … The overall series between South Florida and Central Florida is tied at 6-6 but the Knights have won four straight.

11. Arizona (1-10 overall, 1-7 Pac-12 South)

Results: Will Plummer passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns as Arizona fell to Washington State 44-18.

Game On: Saturday vs. Arizona State (7-4 overall, 5-3 Pac-12 South), 2 p.m. MT (Pac-12 Network)

What’s Up? Arizona State is coming off of a 24-10 loss at Oregon State. … Arizona’s last victory against the Sun Devils came in 2016, a 56-35 win in Tucson.

12. Idaho State (1-10 overall, 1-8 Big Sky)

Results: Idaho notched its first shutout since 1997 with a 14-0 victory against rival Idaho State in the Battle of the Domes.
