It’s no surprise that three-time state champion Corner Canyon finished No. 1 in the Class 6A ratings percentage index used by the Utah High School Activities Association to determine playoff seeding, which was released Saturday.

In 5A, Springville earned the No. 1 seed, and that’s a big deal.

The Red Devils were a No. 11 seed last season, falling to No. 6 Maple Mountain 27-21 in the second round of the playoffs to finish with a 5-6 record.

Things have changed in Class 5A since last season. Timpview and Orem have met in the past two 5A title games, with the Tigers winning both. The Thunderbirds are the No. 2 seed after posting a 7-2 mark against a very difficult schedule. Orem, meanwhile, has struggled against an equally tough slate to a 4-5 mark and will go into the state tournament as a No. 21 seed.

Springville finished the regular season with an 8-1 record, its only loss to No. 6 seed Spanish Fork 36-28 on Sept. 10. A terrific Red Devil offensive line, led by senior Porter Small (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) and sophomore Dallin Johnson (6-3, 275) has paved the way for senior Seth Rigtrup to rush for 1,130 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Stansbury (8-2), which was 7-0 in Region 7, is the No. 3 seed. Region 5 champion Bountiful (7-2) is No. 4 and Provo (7-2) is No. 5.

Timpanogos was 1-10 two years ago and competed as an independent last season but has completed a huge turnaround in 2021 under second-year coach Austin Heaps. The Timberwolves finished 8-2 and will go into the playoffs as the No. 8 seed.

The RPI takes the entire regular season under consideration, not just one game, so even though Lone Peak handed Corner Canyon its only loss the Chargers (9-1) are still the No. 1 seed in Class 6A heading into the state playoffs.

On Oct. 7, the Knights throttled the Chargers 41-16 to end that team’s state tying 48-game winning streak. Lone Peak (6-2) is the No. 2 seed in 6A.

Skyridge – which beat Lone Peak head-to-head 14-9 on Oct. 1 – is the the No. 3 seed at 9-1. American Fork checks in at No. 8 (6-3) and Pleasant Grove (1-9) is No. 21.

Region 1 champion Weber (8-2) is No. 4 and Mountain Ridge (8-2) earns the No. 5 seed.

Desert Hills (9-1) in the top seed in Class 4A, Juab (9-1) in No. 1 in Class 3A, San Juan (9-1) earned the top seed in Class 2A and Duchesne (8-1) earned the No. 1 seed in Class 1A.

The first round of the playoffs begin on Friday at home sites. Game times will be announced on Monday.
