Head Coach: Ed Larsen (9th season)
2021 record: 11-3 overall, 3-1 Region 8
Playoffs: No. 7 seed, def. No. 1 Springville 35-6 in 5A title game
Players to Watch: Isaac Terrell 6-1 250 Sr. DE, Jackson Brousseau 6-5 220 Sr. QB, Carson Gonzalez 5-9 160 Sr. RB, Jensen Somerville 6-7 290 Jr. OT
Outlook: The Pioneers were impressive during their 2021 state tournament run to the 5A title and return 15 starters that led them there.
Still, there will be challenges.
“We have new players in new positions and new leadership in different roles,” Lehi coach Ed Larsen said. “We expect to play hard, smart and fast, knowing that we will have the bullseye on our backs due to last year’s team. We are playing the same tough schedule and in the toughest 5A region. We expect to receive everyone’s best and we will see how we respond.”
On offense, Colorado State commit Jackson Brousseau threw for 3,255 yards and 36 touchdowns last season. Senior running back Carson Gonzalez ran for more than 1,200 yards as a junior and senior tight end Boston Bingham had 44 catches for five touchdowns.
Washington State commit Isaac Terrell, who piled up 23.5 sacks last season, will anchor a defense that will be difficult to beat.
Team captains: “The expectations to be a captain are example, hard work, integrity, team over self-interest and academic strength,” Larsen said. “The team votes for three captains on offense and three on defense. They meet with the head coach every Monday and we have a set agenda that addresses anything that I should be made aware of. Captains speak to the team each week. Three of them speak on Monday about expectations and how we played the previous week. Then three of them speak at the pregame meal about the mindset for the game.”
