Timpview’s Pokai Haunga (17) is downed by several Lone Peak defenders after his helmet was dislodged by Lone Peak defensive back Takeao Hansen (14) during a game between the Lone Peak Knights and the Timpview Thunderbirds held at Lone Peak High School in Highland on Friday, Aug. 13, 2021. Isaac Hale, Special to the Daily Herald

Head Coach: Donny Atuaia (first season)

2021 record: 9-3 overall, 4-0 Region 8

Playoffs: No. 2 seed, lost to No. 7 Lehi 23-13 in 5A quarterfinals

Players to Watch: Pokai Haunga Sr. WR, Micah Beckstead Sr. RB, Spencer Fano Sr. OL, Tei Nacua Jr. WR

Outlook: Andy Stokes stepped down after leading the T-Birds to two state championship appearances (2019, 2020). His replacement comes from within the Timpview program in former BYU fullback Donny Atuaia, who has been an assistant for the T-Birds for the past three seasons. Stokes will remain on the staff as offensive coordinator. In addition, former head coach Cary Whittingham has returned to the team as a defensive assistant.

“For a first time head coach trying to figure things out, it’s nice getting the validation coming from people with experience,” Atuaia said. “I’ve got to figure things out with how to run a program that has been as successful as Timpview, so it’s been nice having them both here.”

The T-Birds offense is led by one of the state’s most recruited players in senior offensive lineman Spencer Fano. Seniors Pokai Haunga (67 catches, 1221 yards, 14 touchdowns) and Jared Esplin (29 catches, 516 yards, three TD’s) along with junior Tei Nacua (30 catches, 538 yards, seven TD’s) make up one of the state’s top receiver groups. Senior running back Micah Beckstead ran for 986 yards and ten scores last season. Timpview will turn to Wasatch transfer Quezon Villa to fill the quarterback spot.

The defense has seniors Hezekiah Anahu-Ambrosia (94 tackles, 21 tackles for loss), Siale Eresa (43 tackles, 15 tackles for loss) and safety J.J. Tuha as standouts.

“It’s just a matter of putting it all together,” Atuaia said. “We’ll be senior heavy even though we lost a lot of studs from last year’s team. We have some underclassmen who can do a lot. There are a lot of moving parts getting everybody in the right place. We open up with Lone Peak, so that will be a good indication of where we are at and what we need to do leaing up to region play.”

The captains: “It’s all a combination of our summer workouts,” Atuaia said. “The team votes along with our coaches to get an all-around view of who should be leading the team. What’s expected of them is not only what’s on the field. Our school is still under construction so a lot of navigation is needed. We want our captains to be studs in the hall and be that example throughout the student body as an extension of the football program.”
