BYU Football Opponent Power Rankings: Nine teams awaiting possible bowl invites

Here’s our weekly ranking of BYU football’s opponents with a look at their schedules and matchups.

1. No. 15 Oregon (9-3, 7-2 Pac-12)

Last results: No. 10 Oregon failed on two key fourth downs late in the game and blew a 34-17 fourth quarter lead in a 38-34 loss to No. 22 Oregon State.

Game On: Awaiting bowl invitation.

What’s Up? Oregon is 5-5 in its past ten bowl games, including a 47-32 loss to Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl in 2021.

2. No. 19 Notre Dame (8-4)

Last results: Drew Pyne passed for 318 yards and three touchdowns but Notre Dame couldn’t stop No. 5 USC in a 38-27 loss.

Game On: Awaiting bowl invitation.

What’s Up? The Irish are 18-21 in bowl games in their history, including a 37-35 loss to Oklahoma State in last season’s Fiesta Bowl.

3. Boise State (9-3, 8-0 MWC Mountain)

Last results: The Broncos finished the MWC regular season undefeated as Taylen Green threw four touchdown passes and ran for another in a 42-23 victory against Utah State.

Game On: Saturday in MWC Championship game vs. Fresno State (8-4), 2 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? The Broncos are 3-2 in previous MWC Championship Games, with its last appearance a 34-20 loss to San Jose State in 2020.

4. Liberty (8-4)

Last results: Diego Pavia accounted for six touchdowns (three passing and three rushing) as New Mexico State shocked Liberty 49-14.

Game On: Awaiting bowl invitation.

What’s Up? Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze was hired by Auburn on Monday to begin his second stint in the SEC, having previously coached at Ole Miss (2012-16).

5. East Carolina (7-5, 4-4 AAC)

Last results: Keaton Mitchell ran for 222 yards and three touchdowns and Holten Ahlers threw his third touchdown pass with 1:11 to play to lift East Carolina to a 49-46 victory against Temple.

Game On: Awaiting bowl invitation.

What’s Up? The Pirates are 9-11 in 20 bowl appearances, losing the 2015 Birmingham Bowl to Florida 28-20. … East Carolina was invited to the 2021 Military Bowl but the game was cancelled due to COVID concerns.

6. Arkansas (6-6, 3-5 SEC West)

Last results: KJ Jefferson threw two touchdown passes and ran for another but the Razorbacks lost to Missouri 29-27.

Game On: Awaiting bowl invitation.

What’s Up? The Razorbacks are 16-24-3 in bowl games, including a 24-10 victory against Penn State in the Outback Bowl last season.

7. Baylor (6-6, 4-5 Big 12)

Last results: Bijan Robinson ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 23 Texas to a 38-27 victory against Baylor.

Game On: Awaiting bowl invitation.

What’s Up? The Bears are 14-12 in bowl games including a 21-7 win against Ole Miss in last season’s Sugar Bowl.

8. Wyoming (7-5, 5-3 MWC Mountain)

Last results: Jordan Mims had three short touchdown runs and the Fresno State defense dominated in a 30-0 shutout of Wyoming.

Game On: Awaiting bowl invitation.

What’s Up? Running back Titus Swen, who has totaled 1,039 yards and eight touchdowns this season, has been dismissed from the team for a violation of unspecified program rules.

9. Utah State (6-6, 5-3 MWC Mountain)

Last results: Cooper Legas threw for 306 yards and a touchdown as the Aggies lost to Boise State 42-23 in the MWC regular-season finale.

Game On: Awaiting bowl invitation.

What’s Up? The Aggies are 5-9 in bowl games, including a 24-13 victory against Oregon State in last year’s LA Bowl.

10. Stanford (3-9, 1-9 Pac-12)

Last results: Tanner McKee completed 31 of 40 for 310 yards and a touchdown as the Cardinal lost their season finale 35-26 to BYU.

Game On: Season is completed.

What’s Up? Cardinal head coach David Shaw resigned after Saturday’s loss to BYU, finishing a 12-year stint at Stanford.

11. Utah Tech (4-7, 3-3 WAC)

Last results: Vince Gabalis passed for 340 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort for Utah Tech, which lost at BYU 52-26.

Game On: Season is completed.

What’s Up? Wide receiver Joey Hobert finished the season with 79 catches for 1,075 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Trailblazers.

12. South Florida (1-11, 0-8 AAC)

Last results: The Bulls trailed Central Florida 31-7 in the third quarter, rallied to take a 39-38 lead with 7:02 to play but lost the game when the Knights scored a touchdown with 20 seconds to play in a 46-39 thriller.

Game On: Season is completed.

What’s Up? Interim head coach Daniel Da Prato went 0-3 after taking over for the fired Jeff Scott, who posted a 4-26 record with the Bulls.
