BYU Football Opponent Rankings: Baylor next up for Cougars in home opener

Here’s our weekly ranking of BYU football’s opponents with a look at their schedules and matchups.

1. No. 9 Baylor (1-0, 0-0 Big 12)

Last results: Baylor rolled up 573 total yards and routed Albany 69-10 in the season opener.

Game On: Saturday at No. 21 BYU (1-0), 8:15 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? BYU routed South Florida 50-21 in Tampa to open the season. … Baylor is making its first trip to Provo since the 1984 season when the Cougars won the NCAA title. BYU won the game, 47-13.

2. No. 8 Notre Dame (0-1)

Last results: Notre Dame led No. 2 Ohio State 10-7 at halftime but was shutout in the second half in a 21-10 loss.

Game On: Saturday vs. Marshall (1-0, 0-0 Sun Belt East), 12:30 p.m. MT (NBC)

What’s Up? Notre Dame was forced to start six of its 10 offensive possessions at our inside its own 15-yard line against Ohio State. … Ethan Payne and Khalan Laborn both went over 100 yards rushing as Marshall opened 2022 with a 55-3 pounding of Norfolk State.

3. No. 16 Arkansas (1-0, 0-0 SEC West)

Last results: Quarterback KJ Jefferson accounted for four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) to lead No. 19 Arkansas to a 31-24 victory against No. 23 Cincinnati.

Game On: Saturday vs. South Carolina (1-0, 0-0 SEC East), 10 a.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? South Carolina returned two blocked punts for touchdowns in a 35-14 win against Georgia State. … Arkansas leads the overall series with South Carolina 13-10 but the Gamecocks have won three in a row, including a 48-22 victory at Columbia in 2017.

4. Oregon (0-1, 0-0 Pac-12 North)

Last results: Stetson Bennett threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 3 Georgia to a 49-3 victory against Oregon.

Game On: Saturday vs. Eastern Washington (1-0, 0-0 Big Sky), 6:30 p.m. MT (PAC12)

What’s Up? Eastern Washington’s Gunner Talkington passed for 348 yards and five touchdowns as the Eagles topped Tennessee State 36-29. … The Ducks and Eagles have met just once before, a wild 61-42 Oregon victory in 2015. Oregon ran for 485 yards and six touchdowns in that game.

5. Stanford (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12)

Last results: Tanner McKee threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns and EJ Smith ran for 118 yards and two more scores as Stanford blasted Colgate 41-10.

Game On: Saturday vs. No. 10 USC (1-0, 0-0 Pac 12), 5:30 p.m. MT (ABC)

What’s Up? USC scored three defensive touchdowns on interception returns in a 66-14 demolition of Rice in Lincoln Riley’s debut as head coach. …The Trojans lead the overall series with Stanford 62-34. The Cardinal won last year’s meeting 42-28 in Los Angeles.

6. Liberty (1-0)

Last results: Kaidon Salter, Liberty’s third quarterback of the night, connected with Demario Douglas for a two-point conversion in the fourth overtime to lift Liberty to a 29-27 win against Southern Miss.

Game On: Saturday vs. UAB (1-0, 0-0 C-USA) , 4 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? UAB jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead in a 59-0 blanking of Alabama A&M. … Liberty and UAB have met just once, with the Flames winning 36-12 in Birmingham last season.

7. Utah State (1-1, 0-0 MWC Mountain)

Last results: Bryce Young threw five touchdown passes and No. 1 Alabama held Utah State to just 136 total yards in a 55-0 victory.

Game On: Saturday vs. Weber State (1-0, 0-0 Big Sky), 5 p.m. MT

What’s Up? Weber State held Western Oregon to just three rushing yards and 132 total in a 41-5 win. … Utah State is 14-1 in the overall series with the Wildcats. Weber State’s only win came in 1978 (44-25 in Logan).

8. Boise State (0-1, 0-0 MWC Mountain)

Last results: The Broncos fell behind 24-0 at halftime and never recovered from that slow start, falling to Oregon State 34-17.

Game On: Friday at New Mexico (1-0, 0-0 MWC Mountain), 7 p.m. MT (CBSSN)

What’s Up? Miles Kendrick threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead New Mexico to a 41-0 shutout of Maine. … Boise State is 11-1 against the Lobos and have won five in a row in the series. New Mexico’s last win was in 2015.

9. East Carolina (0-1, 0-0 AAC)

Last results: East Carolina missed and extra point in the fourth quarter and a 41-yard field goal in the game’s final seconds of a 21-20 loss to No. 13 North Carolina State.

Game On: Saturday vs. Old Dominion (1-0, 0-0 Sun Belt East), 4 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? Old Dominion pulled off a huge upset in Week 1, taking down Virginia Tech 20-17. … East Carolina leads the series with ODU 6-3-1 and has won four in a row, including 24-21 at Norfolk in 2019.

10. Wyoming (1-1, 0-0 MWC Mountain)

Last results: John Hoyland kicked a 30-yard field in the second overtime to lift Wyoming to a 49-37 victory against Tulsa.

Game On: Saturday vs. Northern Colorado (0-1, 0-0 Big Sky), 2 p.m. MT

What’s Up? Tulsa’s Brin Davis threw for 460 yards and three TD’s against Wyoming, which included three receivers with more than 100 receiving yards. … Houston Baptist held on for a 46-34 victory against Northern Colorado to open the 2022 season.

11. South Florida (0-1, 0-0 AAC)

Last results: South Florida fell behind 38-0 in the first half and surrendered 575 total yards in a 50-21 loss to No. 25 BYU.

Game On: Saturday vs. Howard (0-1, 0-0 MEAC), 5 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? Xavier Weaver posted a career-high 113 receiving yards on five catches against BYU. … Howard scored 22 points in the fourth quarter but came up short in a 31-28 loss to Hampton.

12. Utah Tech (0-1, 0-0 WAC)

Last results: No. 7 Sacramento State ran for378 yards in a 56-33 victory against Utah Tech in the season opener for both schools.

Game On: Saturday vs. Chadron State (0-1), 7 p.m. MT

What’s Up? Chadron State had just 164 total yards in a 35-0 loss to Angelo State. … Utah Tech’s Joey Hobert caught 11 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Sacramento State.
