BYU Football Opponent Power Rankings: Oregon surges to top with comeback win

Here’s our weekly ranking of BYU football’s opponents with a look at their schedules and matchups.

1. No. 13 Oregon (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12)

Last results: Bo Nix threw for 428 yards and three touchdowns and No. 15 Oregon scored 21 points in under three minutes of game time in the fourth quarter to knock off Washington State 44-41.

Game On: Saturday vs. Stanford (1-2 overall, 0-2 Pac-12), 9 p.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? Wayne Taulapapa carried 13 times for 120 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 18 Washington past Stanford 40-22. … The Cardinal lead the overall series with Oregon 50-34-1, with Stanford winning last year at home 31-24.

2. No. 16 Baylor (3-1, 1-0 Big 12)

Last results: Blake Shapen threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns to help snap Iowa State’s 11-game home winning streak against Big 12 rivals in a 31-24 victory for No. 17 Baylor.

Game On: Saturday vs. No. 9 Oklahoma State, (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) 1:30 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? Oklahoma State leads the overall series with Baylor 22-19, with the two teams splitting a pair of games last season. … The Cowboys won the regular season meeting 24-14 and the Bears took a 21-16 decision in the Big 12 Championship Game.

3. No. 20 Arkansas (3-1, 1-1 SEC West)

Last results: Cam Little’s 42-yard field goal bounced off the top of the right upright at the 1:30 mark of the fourth quarter and No. 23 Texas A&M escaped with a 23-21 upset of the No. 10 Razorbacks.

Game On: Saturday vs. No. 2 Alabama (4-0, 1-0 SEC West), 1:30 p.m. MT (CBS)

What’s Up? Bryce Young threw for 385 yards and four touchdowns as No. 2 Alabama blasted Vanderbilt 55-3. … The Crimson Tide the overall series with Arkansas 22-8 and has won 14 in a row, including 42-35 last season in Tuscaloosa.

4. Notre Dame (2-2)

Last results: After scoring just 48 points in its first three games, Notre Dame’s offense found a good groove as Drew Pyne threw three touchdown passes in a 45-32 win against North Carolina.

Game On: Bye

What’s Up? Notre Dame has won 25 consecutive regular-season games against ACC opponents. … The Irish will play No. 19 BYU in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium on Oct. 8.

5. Liberty (3-1)

Last results: Jonathan Bennett threw two touchdown passes and Dae Dae Hunter ran for the clinching touchdown in Liberty’s 21-12 victory against Akron.

Game On: Saturday at Old Dominion (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt-East), 4 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? Hayden Wolf passed for 279 yards and two touchdowns as Old Dominion won its first Sun Belt game 29-26 against Arkansas State. … Liberty is 2-1 all-time against the Monarchs and won last year’s meeting 45-17 in Lynchburg.

6. Stanford (1-2, 0-2 Pac-12)

Last results: Tanner McKee passed for 286 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-22 loss to No. 18 Washington.

Game On: Saturday at No. 13 Oregon (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12), 9 p.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? No. 15 Oregon rallied from a 34-22 fourth-quarter deficit to beat Washington State 44-41. … Stanford leads the overall series with Oregon 50-34-1, with the Cardinal winning last year at home 31-24.

7. Wyoming (3-2, 1-1 MWC Mountain)

Last results: Jaren Hall was 26 of 32 for 337 yards and four touchdowns as No. 19 BYU took care of Wyoming 38-24.

Game On: Saturday vs. San Jose State (2-1, 0-0 MWC West), 5:30 p.m. MT (CBSSN)

What’s Up? Chevan Cordeiro passed for 250 yards and two touchdowns and Kairee Robinson added a pair of scoring runs as San Jose State took care of Western Michigan 34-6. … Wyoming leads the all-time series with San Jose State 7-5 but the Spartans won last year in San Jose 27-21.

8. Boise State (2-2, 1-1 MWC Mountain)

Last results: UTEP, a 16.5-point underdog, controlled the ball for 40 minutes and 35 seconds in a 27-10 upset victory against Boise State.

Game On: Friday vs. San Diego State (2-2, 0-0 MWC West), 6 p.m. MT (CBSSN)

What’s Up? SDSU’s Jordan Byrd ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns, including a go-ahead 1-yard TD in the closing seconds of a 17-14 victory against Toledo. … Broncos quarterback Hank Bachmeier left the team and entered the transfer portal this week, making 6-foot-6 freshman Taylen Green the expected starter vs. San Diego State.

9. East Carolina (2-2, 0-1 AAC)

Last results: Daniel Davies made a 36-yard field goal in the second overtime to lead Navy to a 23-20 win against East Carolina.

Game On: Saturday at South Florida (1-3, 0-0 AAC), 5 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? South Florida managed just 158 total yards in a 41-3 drubbing at the hands of Louisville. … The Bulls lead the overall series with East Carolina 9-3 but the Pirates have won the past two meetings, including 29-14 in Greenville last season.

10. South Florida (1-3, 0-1 AAC)

Last results: A week after nearly upsetting Florida, South Florida got drilled by Louisville 41-3 as Malik Cunningham accounted for four touchdowns, three rushing.

Game On: Saturday vs. East Carolina (2-2, 0-1 AAC), 5 p.m. MT (ESPN+)

What’s Up? Isaiah Winstead caught 11 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort as East Carolina fell to Navy 23-20 in double overtime. … The Bulls last win in the series with East Carolina came in 2019, a 45-20 victory in Greenville.

11. Utah State (1-3, 0-1 MWC Mountain)

Last results: Doug Brumfield threw for one touchdown and ran for two more as UNLV topped Utah State 34-24 in Logan, its first victory over the Aggies since 2008.

Game On: Thursday at No. 19 BYU, 6 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? Utah State had 421 total yards to 320 for UNLV but was just 4 of 13 on third down and had six turnovers in a 34-24 loss. … BYU leads the overall series with Utah State 50-37-3, with the Cougars winning the past two meetings. Utah State’s last win in the series came in 2018, a 45-20 victory at Provo.

12. Utah Tech (1-3, 0-1 WAC)

Last results: Justin Miller threw for 352 yards and two touchdowns to lead Southern Utah to a 31-17 victory against Utah Tech.

Game On: Saturday vs. Abilene Christian (3-1, 0-0 WAC), 7 p.m. MT

What’s Up? Utah Tech’s Koby Tracy is unofficially second in the FCS in passing yards with 1,289. … Rovaugn Banks rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns to lead Abilene Christian to a 34-7 victory against Western New Mexico.
