The BYU and Utah Valley track teams got to stay close to home this weekend and made the most of the opportunity.

Cougar men’s and women’s athletes combined to win 15 events on the final day of the Robison Invitational at the Clarence Robison Track and Field Complex on Saturday.

The No. 11-ranked BYU women’s squad came through with nine event wins, led by Cierra Tidwell Allphin winning the high jump with a clearance of 1.80-meters/5-10.75. Tidwell Allphin has now won in two of her last four meets and holds the nation’s No. 3 women’s high jump spot with a season-best 1.88m/6-2.

Women’s distance started the day strong with Destiny Everett coasting to 3,000-meter steeplechase victory with a personal-best time of 10:33.81. Everett broke away from the pack early-on and crossed the finish with a comfortable 34-second lead over runner-up Karli Branch of No. 25 Utah.

Jacey Farmer, Natalie Hlusi and Aubrey Frentheway dominated the mile podium with Farmer taking the top spot at 4:50.43, followed by Hlusi at 4:51.69 and Frentheway at 4:53.63.

The Cougars also held the top-6 spots in the 800-meters with Riley Chamberlain winning at 2:05.27. Chamberlain, Alissa Fielding (third) and Krystie Solomon (fifth) each recorded personal bests in the 800 as well.

Jaslyn Gardner led women’s sprints with three wins on Saturday. Gardner took the 100-meters at 11.26, the 200 at 23.44 and anchored the 4×100-meter relay to a win at 44.88.

The 4×400-meter squad of Marianne Barber, Annalise Hart, Sami Oblad and Brilee Pontius also won with a time of 3:39.03.

The No. 6-ranked BYU men’s team set four new personal records and had 15 top-three finishes across nine events Saturday.

Ranked No. 8 nationally in the discus throw, Dallin Shurts recorded a 59.66m/195-8.75 heave to finish atop 33 participants.

The Cougars dominated the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing all four runners in the top four. Christian Allen led wire to wire, crossing the line at 9:02.22 in his first-ever collegiate steeplechase. James Corrigan came next at 9:04.86, followed by Garrett Stanford (9:07.95) and Zach Erikson (9:26.55).

The 4×100-meter crew of Kyler Haughton, Trey Jackson, Easton Bianchi and Dallin Draper teamed up to record a first-place and season-best, 39.33 finish. The performance was good for 16th nationally as the group finished just 0.45 seconds behind the all-time school record set in 1999.

Freshman hurdlers Treyton Anderson and Logan Hubler placed first and second in the 110-meter hurdles final with 14.77 and 14.82 performances, respectively. Hubler’s 14.82 time was a new personal record, besting his 15.00 record set just yesterday in the preliminary round.

Abram Schaap took down a four year-old personal record in his finish atop the 200-meters, crossing the line at 21.04. His prior personal best in the event was 21.67, also at the Robison Invitational in 2019.

The men’s 4×400-meter squads took first and second, as Squad A – Jared Davis, Dallin Draper, Eli Hazlett and Trey Jackson – won the event at 3:07.92. Jace Jensen, Landon Maxfield, Abram Schaap and Josh Taylor led Squad B to a 3:08.56 finish.

UVU also had some superlative performances at the event.

For the third time this season, Wolverine star Kelsi Oldroyd set a new school record in the javelin. Her top throw of 56.66 meters also took first place and extends her WAC-leading mark. It would be No. 7 in the country, pending the rest of the weekend’s results.

Oldroyd also reset the school’s long jump record–again breaking her own top mark–on Friday.

Emma Johnson also had a big day, setting personal records in both the 100 and 200. In the 100-meter race, she finished fourth with a time of 11.80 seconds. That moves her from sixth to fourth in the school’s top 10. She also took fifth in the 200 with a PR of 24.56 seconds.

The Wolverine women had five of the top seven finishers in the 5,000, led by Boise State transfer Oakley Olson’s second-place finish (17:17.87).

Utah Valley is slated to compete at the Bengal Invitational at Idaho State next week as the postseason nears. The 2023 WAC Championship is less than three weeks out and runs May 10-13 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

The Cougars return to the road as they compete at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona on April 29.
