BYU players celebrate with sophomore Allie Fryer (23) after she scored during the exhibition game against Idaho State at South Field in Provo on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023.

BYU women’s soccer beat Idaho State 7-0 in its final exhibition game of the 2023 season at South Field on Saturday night.

Both Allie Fryer and Brecken Mozingo tallied braces for the Cougars, with Kendell Petersen, Bella Folino and Erin Bailey each scoring one. As a team, BYU took 37 total shots, with 18 being on frame.

The Bengals took only one shot through 90 minutes, leaving BYU goalies untested for most of the evening.

This win marks the second time in a row that the Cougars have beaten the Bengals 7-0, the last time being in the 2021 season.

The Cougars started fast from the get-go, with two goals in the first six minutes on the pitch. The first goal came in the third minute as defender Petersen, the senior from South Weber, broke away and rocketed the ball into the lower right side of the net. This is the first goal from Petersen since 2018.

Sophomore forward Fryer kept the momentum up with a goal of her own in the sixth minute, assisted by senior midfielder Olivia Wade-Katoa, bringing the score to 2-0.

In the 17th minute, Idaho State’s Isabella Winton fouled Mozingo, giving the Cougars a free kick outside the 18-yard box. Mozingo fired the free kick to senior forward Folino, who tapped it in the bottom right of the goal, taking the 3-0 lead.

Fryer notched her second goal of the night in the 25th minute with assists from sophomore forward Ellie Walbruch and senior forward Rachel McCarthy.

Bailey turned a loose ball into another goal in the 37th minute to bring the score to 5-0 heading into halftime.

Mozingo found the goal twice early in the second half. Her first came from a penalty kick after Bengal Brooklyn Kouns fouled Folino in the 52nd minute. Just two minutes later, Mozingo found the back of the net off a Folino assist, rounding out the 7-0 win over Idaho State.

BYU will return to South Field Thursday, Aug. 17 to face off against Saint Louis at 7 pm MDT for the first non-conference game of the 2023 season. The game will be carried by ESPN+.

UVU women’s soccer ties Weber State in exhibition

Faith Webber scored a goal in the 59th minute to secure a 1-1 tie against in-state foe Weber State on Saturday night in an exhibition match at Wildcat Soccer Field in Ogden, Utah.

“I thought we were lethargic and heavy legs tonight,” said Utah Valley head coach Chris Lemay. “I’m glad it was an exhibition and didn’t count. We’ll address all those things for Thursday and come out and play more like ourselves.”

Webber gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute after finding the ball inside the box on the left side. Webber made a move around two Weber State defenders and fired a shot with her left foot out over the Wildcat keeper to give the Wolverines the 1-0 lead.

Weber State’s Ali Swenson tied things up on a penalty kick after the Wolverines were called for a hand ball in the box in the 85th minute.

Utah Valley outshot Weber State 18-5 on the night, including a 5-2 advantage on frame. The Wolverines had nine corner kicks to WSU’s one. The Wolverine defense held the Wildcats scoreless through 85 minutes.

Webber led the Wolverines with a game-high seven shots, including one on goal. Ruby Hladek had six shots with a game-best three on frame. Manthy Brady had two shots, while Jenna Shepherd Gremillion and Sydney Bushman each had one.

Idalia Serrano played the first half in the box without allowing a goal. Leah Wolf played 25 minutes in goal with one save. CJ Graham played the final 20 minutes in the box.

UVU softball promotes Sam Kukuk to associate head coach

Utah Valley softball head coach Cody Thomson has announced the promotion of Sam Kukuk to associate head coach. Kukuk is entering her third season at Utah Valley, and has been an assistant coach the last two seasons.

“The Wolverine softball team will be in great hands with Coach Sam becoming the associate head coach,” said Thomson. “I am honored to have Sam right by my side. When I offered her this position, she accepted. She gave me a hug and said, ‘Let’s go win a WAC championship!'”

“The past two years here at Utah Valley have been absolutely incredible,” said Kukuk. “I am so fortunate to be working for one of the best athletic departments in the country. I can’t thank Cody Thomson and this entire administration enough for believing in me. This new title represents every single student athlete who has helped shape me into the coach that I am today. I am honored to be a part of this great University. The future is very bright here at UVU, and I am so excited for what’s next!”

Kukuk is entering her ninth year of collegiate coaching. Her career began at San Diego State in 2015, where she was a volunteer assistant. She then went on to be a graduate assistant at CSU Bakersfield from 2016-18, during which the Roadrunners were members of the WAC. Kukuk then coached at Cal State East Bay from 2018-21 before joining Thomson’s staff in the summer of 2021.

Kukuk attended national power UCLA and was a four-year letterwinner for the Bruins from 2011-15. Kukuk was a part of four NCAA Regional and two NCAA Super Regional teams, including during her senior season in 2015. That UCLA squad advanced to the Women’s College World Series, where Kukuk scored a run in the Bruins’ win over Oregon in their opening game.

A native of Whittier, California, Kukuk obtained an undergraduate degree from UCLA in political science and later earned a master’s degree in public policy and administration from CSU Bakersfield.
