Former Utah Valley University men’s basketball standout Trey Woodbury has signed a professional contract with nine-time German Champions and five-time German Cup winner Brose Bamberg.

Brose Bamberg plays in the Bundesliga (BBL), which is the highest-level league of professional basketball in Germany. Former Wolverine Kenneth Ogbe played for Bamberg from 2020-22.

“The last piece of the puzzle has been found,” said Brose Bamberg head coach Oren Amiel. “We were looking for a point guard who can also play the other guard position. Trey meets that requirement. We think Trey will be a good combination with Malik (Johnson). Both have different play styles and abilities and complement each other perfectly.”

Woodbury led Utah Valley to a pair of WAC regular season championships and a run to the semifinals of the NIT during his UVU career. He averaged 13.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.7 assists last season, leading Utah Valley to a school-record 28 wins and a trip to the semifinals of the NIT in his hometown, Las Vegas. He became just the third UVU player to record a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists in UVU’s outright WAC-clinching win over Stephen F. Austin this past season. Woodbury became just the ninth Utah Valley player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark and now ranks eighth on UVU’s all-time career scoring list with 1,085 points. In his four seasons with the Wolverines, Woodbury averaged 11.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. He played 91 career games for Utah Valley.

Bamberg plays at Brose Arena in Bamberg, Bayern, Germany. Woodbury will open the season with Bamberg on Sept. 28 against RASTA Vechta.

Wolverines tab John-Lewis for men’s basketball staff

Utah Valley men’s basketball head coach Todd Phillips has announced the addition of Kaleb John-Lewis as the program’s Strength and Conditioning coach. John-Lewis spent last season as a sports performance coach for the Stanford men’s basketball team.

“I’m looking forward to having Kaleb be a part of the Wolverine family,” said Phillips. “When we interviewed Kaleb, his knowledge and energy jumped out immediately. He will be a great asset to our program and I’m excited for him to get to work building our guys strength and endurance.”

John-Lewis spent the 2022-23 season as the sports performance coach for the Stanford men’s basketball team. He spent the summer working with the Stanford football team.

Prior to working at Stanford, John-Lewis worked as a strength and conditioning coach at Ford Sports Performance in Bellevue, Washington. He also spent time at the Seattle Sports Institute in Kirkland, Washington.

John-Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Law, Coolbaugh added to BYU baseball staff

BYU head baseball coach Trent Pratt announced Tuesday the hiring of assistant coaches Adam Law and Tyler Coolbaugh. Law, who has been working for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Coolbaugh, who comes from the University of Arizona, will assist with recruiting, player development, team defense, hitting and mental performance training.

Law was member of the Cougar baseball team from 2009-13 and returns to BYU after spending the previous four years working for the Los Angeles Dodgers in international operations and as a mental performance coach. Law retired from professional baseball in 2019, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He later earned a master of arts degree in performance psychology from National University in La Jolla, California in 2021. He is also a certified mental performance consultant through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. In addition, Law is also the owner of, and mental performance specialist for, Mojo Lab, where he works one-on-one with elite athletes to learn and apply mental skills that will help them consistently perform at peak levels. Law is the son of Vance Law, who played baseball and basketball for BYU before playing MLB for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics from 1980-91. He is also the grandson of Cy Young Award winner Vern Law, who played 16 seasons (1950-51, 1954-67) for the Pirates. Vance served as the head baseball coach at BYU for 13 seasons (2000-12) where he led the Cougars to 397 wins.

Coolbaugh joins the BYU baseball staff having spent the previous two seasons as the director of player development at the University of Arizona. While at Arizona, he was instrumental in developing an array of cutting-edge player development tools and emerging technology such as TrackMan, TruMedia, Blast Motion and Rapsodo. Prior to joining the Arizona baseball staff in 2021, Coolbaugh worked for the Texas Rangers in player development and was the hitting coach for the Rookie Dominican Summer League Rangers. Coolbaugh also spent time coaching at Abilene Christian University in 2020-21, where he worked with infielders, assisted with the offense, oversaw campus recruiting and coordinated camps. In addition, he was the director of player development at Nicholls State University in 2020 and also coached the Sod Squad in the Amarillo Texas League in 2020. Coolbaugh majored in communications and media studies at Angelo State and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and sciences from Oklahoma in 2018. He is the son of Scott Coolbaugh, who played third base for the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and the St. Louis Cardinals from 1989-94.

Nelly announced as halftime show for Big 12 title game

As BYU enters the Big 12 Conference everything seems bigger, including halftime shows.

The league announced on Wednesday that three-time Grammy-award winning artist Nelly will perform at halftime of the 2023 Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship game. Nelly will be joined by the marching bands of both participating teams. Additional entertainment and fan experience enhancements for the Football Championship game will be announced at a later date.

“We are thrilled to announce Nelly will be joining our school’s marching bands to perform at the first-ever Big 12 Football Championship halftime show,” said Commissioner Brett Yormark. “The Big 12 is committed to living at the intersection of sports and culture and introducing Championship enhancements that are best in class.”

Nelly is no stranger to the gridiron. The nine-time Billboard Music Award-winner has performed in the halftime shows of Super Bowl XXXV and Super Bowl XXXVIII. Additionally, Nelly performed at halftime of the 2022 NFL Divisional Playoff matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs, and made his acting debut in the 2005-remake of “The Longest Yard”.
