Former BYU and pro basketball standout Kyle Collinsworth earned a reputation as a player who could pile up the assists.
He’s still setting others up for success.
Collinsworth has stepped back from playing professionally for now but is keeping busy as an assistant boys coach at Salem Hills High School, helping people get into shape through his Worth Fitness app and directing “Defensive Love” basketball camps all over the Mountain West.
On Saturday, Collinsworth is providing an assist with a free basketball camp for local refugee children through his non-profit called “Up and Doing.”
The camp is for ages 7 to 18 and will be held at Salem Hills High School (150 Skyhawk Blvd in Salem) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Transportation and food will be provided for anywhere between 100 and 250 refugee youth that have moved to Utah recently from the Sudan, Ukraine and other countries in the middle East.
“We want to help give them a good time and a good experience, welcoming them to Utah,” Collinsworth said. “Some of these kids, it’s tough to get comfortable in a whole new environment. Sometimes they can get into trouble. So we’re connecting with refugee centers and providing opportunities for kids to get their feet in the community, to have fun and have a great experience. We’re using sports to help better build Zion.”
Collinsworth said he was going to do more individual health coaching in 2024 but still has a desire to help young players develop their basketball skills.
“I love seeing kids improve,” he said. “It’s cool seeing individuals have success and reach their goals.”
