Utah Valley's Trey Woodbury (4) handles the ball against Cal Baptist during a men's college basketball game on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Trailing by two points, 66-64, Trey Woodbury knocked down a three with 13 seconds left on the clock that gave Utah Valley a lead it would not relinquish in a 71-67 road win over California Baptist on Wednesday night at the CBU Events Center.

Utah Valley extends its win streak to 11 games and pushes its record to 14-4 overall and a perfect 5-0 in WAC play. The 11 wins is the third-longest win streak in the nation. UVU has now won six straight road games which is the second-longest streak in the country.

“I’m happy for our guys,” said Utah Valley head coach Mark Madsen. “There was some adversity in the first half. We were down 11 points in the first half and our guys just kept on fighting. Obviously, Trey Woodbury with that shot at the end was huge, but he also had great time management at the end of the first half. I was really happy with the way Le’Tre (Darthard) stepped up in the second half. He’s always ready to shoot and that’s what makes him great. He’s doing a great job of getting to the basket and he’s automatic from the free throw line.”

Woodbury finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field and a 2-of-5 mark from long range. He also dished out six assists and pulled down five rebounds.

Le’Tre Darthard scored 16 points with three rebounds and a steal. Darthard finished a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, which included four straight makes at the stripe over the final 13 seconds that helped the Wolverines secure the win. He knocked down 4-of-7 shots from the field, including a 2-of-4 mark from beyond the arc. Darthard has now knocked down 28 straight free throws.

Justin Harmon and Tim Fuller were also in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Harmon also had five rebounds with two steals and a block. Fuller was just three rebounds shy of a double-double with seven boards.

Aziz Bandaogo pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, marking the 12th time this season that the sophomore center has pulled down 10 or more rebounds in a game. Bandaogo also had six points with a block.

Tim Ceaser scored five points with six rebounds and two blocks off the bench.

After shooting 40.6 percent in the first half, Utah Valley shot a 52 percent clip in the second half as the team finished the night with a 45.6 percent (26-57) mark on the night, including 46.2 percent (6-13) from long range. The Wolverines down 13 of their 15 free throws.

UVU outrebounded the Lancers 36-32 and outscored CBU 40-30 in the paint.

California Baptist jumped out to a 10-4 lead and never trailed in the first half, leading by as many as 11 points, 31-20, with five minutes remaining in the first half. UVU outscored the Lancers 11-2 over the final five minutes to only trail by two points at the half, 33-31.

In the second half, Darthard made a layup to tie the game, 43-43, with 15:51 on the clock and then pulled down a rebound and knocked down a three on the other end to give the Wolverines their first lead of the game, 46-43. There were then seven lead changes and four ties over the final 15 minutes before Woodbury knocked down the go-ahead three with 13 seconds on the clock. Darthard then iced the win for UVU with four straight free throws over the final 13 seconds of the game.

Utah Valley now returns home to take on Seattle U on Saturday at the UCCU Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

WAC leader SUU holds off UVU women

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Utah Valley came up just short in its attempt to pick up a road win at WAC leader Southern Utah on Wednesday, falling 70-66 in the American First Event Center.

Kaylee Byon scored a career-high 19 points, Mae Afoa also set a new career high with 13 points and Shay Fano added 11 points and eight rebounds.

“I’m proud of the effort we left out on the floor tonight. Southern Utah is a good team and we battled them in tough conditions and gave ourselves a chance to win,” said UVU head coach Dan Nielson. “We had a lot of girls step up tonight. I like the signs I’m seeing as the season goes and I’m confident we’ll have some results go our way.”

The Wolverines (4-12, 1-4) were within three points in the waning moments of the game but couldn’t get the game-tying three to drop and the T-Birds (8-7, 4-0) got a free-throw in the final seconds to put it away.

The Wolverines were whistled for 28 fouls in the game and had two starters — Eleyana Tafisi and Shay Fano — foul out. Tafisi picked up her fifth foul after just 14 minutes on the court, fouling out early in the fourth, and Fano was whistled for her fifth with 3:38 left when she was called for an offensive foul down low with the score 64-62.

The Wolverines return home Saturday to host Abilene Christian at 2 p.m. MT in the UCCU Center.
